Hello everyone :)
I'm new on here and new to driving!
Passed my test on tuesday and i was lucky enough to buy a car on the same day :)
Ended up with a Seat Ibiza 1.2LX 54 plate, only got 11,000 miles on the clock. Really pleased :D

I'm young and well modding your car in certain areas appeals to me :).
The first thing i want to do is change the speakers, i don't think the ones in the car standard are that bad actually, but i'm really into my music and i'm the type of guy that spends £100's on headphones, and now that i'll be listening to 90% of my music in the car i want a nice system. I'm not too bothered about a sub though, i'm into indie music i just think it would almost be a waste and pretty pointless. (maybe get on the future)

Well all i'm trying to find out is,

What size speakers will i be able to fit in the front doors, tweeters, and the rear, i haven't decided whether i'm going to mod the parcel shelf, i'm going to be keeping the car for a couple of years so i may put some in on the parcel shelf and disconnect the rear ones?

Also, is it a painful job, changing the head unit, new speakers in the front, tweeters and wiring it up so all my wires are hidden and nice and neat, so no-one could tell, apart from the obvious 2 speakers on the parcel shelf :) Or should i get a technician that a friend knows to do it for a sly bit of cash on the side?

Thanks in advance.
I'm Tom by the way

11,000 miles in 4 years?

It's not worth owning a car if you do that little mileage - what was the previous owner thinking!?!

That's 2750 miles a year - I do about that every 6 weeks!!

haha,
By all accounts he lived near work so i'm guessing this was a run around to the shops :)
It was from a main dealer so its all truth/legal.

Its like new inside can't tell its used to be honest, as for the exterior its perfect, there's just one very slight dint in the door, but might get that removed in time.

Hi Tom

Nice one passing your driving test, I know its hard these days, Im a driving Instructor and teach in my Ibiza FR, oh yes hehe.

Anyways, speakers.

Dont bother speakers in the parcel shelf, personally thats a waste if anything.

All depends on your budget but this is what I would recommend as a great starter system

Front speakers - you can fit 6.5" Components in the front doors without much problem. You may need to build speaker mounts out of MDF or possibly buy some speaker mounts if they are available. The tweeters can be installed in the original positions easily, or with some work and modding, in the A pillars. Ive got pics of my install somewhere, Ill try find them.

Amp, a four channel amp will be great here. Channels 1+2 run in stereo for the front speakers, then channels 3+4 bridged to run a sub.

Rear speakers.. dont bother.

Sub, yes you will want one eventually, so with the 4 channel amp, youre already set up. A sub makes a massive difference in sound to any system, even a simple 8" or a 10" They dont need to be in massive boxes either.

Where are you based?

Hi baz,
What an amazing instructors car! You've got some lucky pupils! I learnt in a skoda Fabia 1.4 tdi thought it was a good little car.

Thanks for all the advice there mate :) appreciate it!
So would you recommend dis-connecting the standard speakers and just sticking the 2 decent front ones?

And i am definitely thinking of sound proofing it, i hate that constant rattle when the base kicks in

I'm based in ilkley, west yorkshire.

Thanks again baz

Yes mate, all my pupils love it, but not as much as I do hehe.

No probs about the advice, always happy to help. Once you have a decent amp and decent speakers, there is NO need for the standard speakers as the new ones (hopefully) will sound a lot better, so yes disconnect the standards.

Soundproofing is a great idea but a lot of work, but worth it as it pays off in the end. I wanted to soundproof mine, but never got round to it unfortunately and now might be selling it to get something else.

Do you plan to change the stereo too?

Baz

Yeah i think i will be doing, fancy one that you can connect an ipod too.
The Pioneer DEH6000UB looks quite nice.
I'll have to be fussy thought and get one with red backing lights to match my dashboard haha!

What speakers have you in yours?
If i'm not going to be getting rear ones then i can spend a little more on some :)

Thanks again

I have Boston 6.5 Pro comps in mine running off a DLS A7 amp.

head Unit is a Alpine 9887R which has different colours, including red that matches the rest of the dash perfectly.

What kinda budget have you got to play with?

EDIT: The Alpine range esp the X001 is a great unit that controls the ipod the best, altho it doesnt have a cd slot, its just a ipod and tuner thats all. The one I have has a CD slot too and is a great unit. Used to have a X001 and loved it.

So....

Head Unit: Alpine 9886
Speakers: DLS R6A

A 4 channel amp at a later date when funds permit, followed by a sub. Done.

Damn that milage is like mine, 53 plate with 14.8K
Rnadom question
What's your sorta music?
It's just good to know :D
If you want some quality advice on speakers for either Sound quality (SQ) or performance (SPL) go to talkaudio.co.uk, and they'll help you in seconds. They changed my mind from getting two Vibe subs to two Ascendant Audios :D (I never heard about them before either!!)

Is that £400 budget including Head unit as well?
If you got an ipod, have a look at the Alpine IDA-X200 for £126 or the upper model, the IDA-X100 for just on £200. I've heard nothing but praise about those units as many people on here will agree, and if you're looking at quality speakers with a bit of punch (I'm guessing) have a look at these makes:
Focal
Rainbow
Genesis (more SQ)
Diamond Audio
CDT Audio
the list goes on..... :D

Oh and by the way, welcome mate!!

edit: with that £400 budget, this is a sort of list I would make up:
IDA-X200 @ £126
Rainbow SLX625 Speakers @ £97
Pioneer-Gm6300F 4 Ch amp (leaves you with adding sub option) @ £132
and that leaves you with about £40 for cables/ fitting adaptors (if needed, not so sure)

That's a very quick look about on Car audio direct, I'm sure you'll find better :D

considering your music is mostly to be in stereo, there's no "surround sound" to it. But i'd say leave the speakers there to sap off the HU, or put some half decent cones there just for that little bit more SPL..ness

I'm a Pioneer HU fan boi so i'd say get a Pioneer HU (the model in my sig does ipod, bluetooth, remote control, red colour lights, and wire remote ready), the near top modesl can hack it with the Alpines IMHO. Infinity and JBL speakers have never failed me so i recommend some Reference components.

oh btw if you do a search, some one here did do a mod and put some 6x9 speakers in the rear speaker location, better than cutting up some holes in that flimsy parcel shelf!
