New Model Leon Cupra (Knocking noise)

Hey guys,

In the past short while I've noticed a small noise coming from the area of under the front left arch... firstly i noticed it when i was going very slow pulling into a space in a car park. I didn't think much of it but then I headed home to Ireland for a couple of weeks so my car was left sitting up for a little while. I arrived back to Wales and as soon as I started to drive the car i realised the syptoms have gotten worse. The noise is now when i brake... it is a knocking noise coming from the front left arch/tyre area. I only have the car since October so I am not impressed at all seeing as the car is new. I noticed that the knocking practically stopped when I'd driven it for a few miles.

Any ideas?

i had a similar sound.. i think it was a loose bolt on gearbox mount or similar... get your hands dirty mate and take a long peek under the car to see if you can notice anything obvious.. failing that take it to your dealer

No it sounds more like there's something wrong with the brakes.. although they are working fine..

Hi, I have a FR DSG, and have had a similar noise looked at, mine on the drivers side. I initially thought something was fouling the wheel. When I took it to the dealer, they had a 1/2 hour look and test drive and told me that there is a bearing at the top of the shock-mount that can become unseated. This produces a knocking/grinding sound under heavy braking or on full lock. It's going in to be done on Tuesday, so I'll get a definite diagnosis and resolution then.

Hope this helps

Thanks a mill... yea that sounds like it could be the same prob as mine as i get the noise on full lock too. Will the warrenty cover this to be fixed? Really wasn't expecting to have to pay for anything to be fixed this early on in the cupras life!

yup all under warranty. Make sure to answer the "have you been over any speed humps really fast?" question with a "NO!"

I don't think they were trying to catch me out (I genuinely haven't), but best to play safe ;). Will give you an update when I get it back probably Thursday/Friday.

OK, it was indeed the top strut bearing that needed replacing. The explanation for mine going so early was my rural location (hence bad roads) and 18" wheels! However, everything is perfect now so I'd suggest you get that checked (all under warranty of course)
