New mk1 owner upgrade/info help!

Hi peeps!
Just got my self a P plate mk1 TDi SXE as a run about its a cat D writeoff with only a ding in the front wing.
Was cheap enough and i quite like it,just about everything works including the air con and it seems to drive fine (not driven it far as of yet) but i should get it taxed tested and insured very soon.
Wanted to know what it based on tbh i was thinking mk2 Ibiza???? at the front it looks just like a mk2 golf to me! does anyone know what the rear is based on?
I ask as while its gonna be a cheap hack i'd still like to upgrade the suspension to make it handle a bit better,mabe the brakes too if they don't feel great,but i'll probably keep the engine as it is.
I'm a bit of a mk2 golf man so if anything will fit from one i'd like to know as it'd be a benifit
Really looking forward to running it now and i guess i'll find out what they're really like soon enough!

I did a bit of net hunting looking for any info on my toledo before decided to get it and found a few things one being on a site called answers .com

http://www.answers.com/topic/seat-toledo was the addy for it and it says the mk1 or first generation was built on a mk2 golf chassis. Also when I went looking for a power steering pump for mine round the scrapyards I ended up getting 1 out a golf with the same mounting bracket as the toledo's.

I think its the 90bhp TDI engine, its appeared in a lot of VAG's, Ibiza, Cordoba, Toldeo, Leon, Golf, Polo Saloon.

Interior bits can be swapped around with some ibiza stuff, for example seat ibiza cupra leather seats fit

Picked up a P reg Toledo 1.9tdi as a cheap run around.
I think its a 90bhp, im currently trying to find out if its possible to get this remapped for a little more power Anyone have any info on this..?

Strangely the air con on mine is also ice cold, not what you expect from an 11 year old shed
I paid 425quid, its got 126k but only 1 months MOT. Its booked in for saturday morning.

Your not wrong there! if it lasts the year then i look at it being a free car
Mine has 106k and a small dent on the osf wing(not going to bother fixing it),gonna stand me the same sort of money when its t&t'd

Was also thinking if i could get it chipped cheap!!! mabe a 2nd hand tuning box or something? i think it is a mk3 golf TDi engine,90bhp as you say and intercooled.
Got a masive boot which is handy,only thing i want to change is the seats as they're not much good and in a light brown colour. looks like a mk2 golf fitting (wish i hadnt given away my old mk2 interior now) so i might get some more cheap fronts for a bit more comfort and leave the rear (can't think of anything that looks/folds the same in the vw range)

If it knack it i think i'll break it for parts as it has some handy parts on it for golf conversions (could do with the hydrolic cable operated clutch mech now lol)
But i think its going to be a great hack

Well it doesnt look like good news on the performance front.
I emailed Jabbasport as I only work abut 10 miles away and just got this response:

Hi Dan,

Unfortunately, you’re partly correct, the engine still does have an engine management system, however we cant do anything with this particular management system as the system itself is too old.

Well i've found a cheapish plug & play tuning box for it now so i think i'll take a gamble on one when i get the car on the road,what it really needs is uprated shocks and springs as the OE are soft and bouncy,brakes seem OK! but i can easily upgrade these later.
I just need to know for sure which rear suspension it uses, golf or polo???
Will let you know how i get along

Did the tuning box work? Are you running a 1Z engine with 8-pins?

Also, Golf II shocks fit.

Didn't get the tuning box,a few problems have come up with it i checked the pins but can't remember which it was (think it might be 8 as they were sold out all the time on ebay)
central locking has stopped working on the drivers door,
rear shocks have gone,
I think the fuel pump is on its way out (boosts on/off/on/off)
Shame as i like the car,its still ok round the doors etc.. but when i get another car i think i might break it tbh.

Central locking could be split cables where they bend from the body to the door.

Rear shocks are a doddle and dirt cheap. Get some new bump stops too though.

Boost could be a split pipe?

Biggest prob I found was rust! Spent some time learning to weld it last Summer/Autumn!
