Hi all,

I am in the process of selling my present car and have been looking for something more 'sensible' size wise and have settled on the Seat Leon Cupra.

I have done various searches on the forum but was just wondering if anyone had any particular tips on what to look for. It seems that most of the vehicles floating around have had their engines remapped and I've seen a number of ads claiming an increase in power to 250 odd bhp. I haven't mentioned this to my insurance company yet but I would imagine they'll be over the moon :)

My budget should be around the £6k mark which seems to give me a fair amount of choice. Alot of the motors I have been looking at are higher milers i.e. 60,000+, bar the cambelt change is the reliability good on a Leon of this age?

As my present car is a 2.8l and fairly quick I would like something that doesn't bore me to death. I suppose the increase in power from an engine remap does appeal so I would probably go for something like that.

I did see this one

although there seems to be some debate as to whether the figures quoted are correct. There is also one for sale on this site although it's based in Devon and not sure I'd have the time to see it.....

From other threads i've read on here, 250 is just about acheiveable on the pre-facelift lc, but requires a lot of work to get there, full exhaust, custom remap,, fmic, forge tubo inlet pipe, etc, which is going to cost around somewhere close to £1500-2000, as a guesstimate.

Realiabilty on the early lc (i've got one with 35k) seems to be pretty good, not had any major problems in the 13months i've had it, on the higher mileages the cam belt obviously needs doing at around the 60k mark, but others on here have higher mileage lc's so thier probably better to tell you what their like on reliabilty issues...

Had my 01 LC from 20k, currently at 70k.
Only major problem was the water pump failing a couple of months ago which is a known problem with these engines and means having a cambelt service as well, there's loads on this if you do a search.
New MAF and coolant temp sensor a year ago (another common one).
I electively changed the DV for a Forge 007P (much better and nice & shiny too), the oem (Bosch) one wasn't faulty but they are a weak point, as are the coil packs although I've never had any fail on me yet (touch wood).
Other than that had new pads all round at 33k, just fitted new front pads and disks. Had a couple of CV boots at different times and replaced all lower arm bushes at 35k, think they're due again and will prob do the lower ball joints as well while I'm there but they're all wear and tear items.
Had my motor for 4 years and loved every minute.
