i just changed my gearbox 'coz it got shredded or something, some sort of loud grinding sound when i drove.
the mechanic that changed it said that it was the gearbox specific to my car (99 ibiza mk2) i dont know what the code is on it though, but i dont really trust him coz now when i drive the gear ratios are slightly different in low gears (not much)
and when i hit 5th gear i cant get past 85mph coz the tachometer reads about 5.5ish!!
and also i get this whistling sound when im speeding which i didnt get before ...a mate with a civic told me that there is a gap between the clutch and air gets into it so it whistles etc ..told me its the clutch bearings. but the thing i dont get is i didnt change the clutch? ...so if anyone could tell me what the problems im having are related to please it would be a big help? the mechanic says that every gearbox is different so i probably just need time to get adjusted to it, but man this is taking the piss. i didnt get these problems before? :wtf:

is it a 1.4 ibiza? as at work (sachs, zf trading) we have one in at the minute, with a hole in the side of it. Some guy is claiming for the gearbox as he thinks the clutch took out his gearbox, little does he know that it had sweet fook all to do with the clutch as there was already debris inside the bell housing.

The hole was on the clutch bell housing ( the area in which the clutch fits into.) it was at the bottom ish left hand side. The hole is maybe the size of a penny, its near where the drive shaft goes into the gearbox. sound familiar?

He probably put in the wrong gearbox, maybe one from a 1.6, which is why it wont rev, but could be from anything 1.1L Golf, Beeza. Look at the bottom of the box and find the code and blokes on here can tell you what car its from or what ratios it has.

Whisling could be tired diff. Does it have oil in the box. These boxes are the weakest point of the car.

i just took it to anoter mechanic and he confirmed that the wrong gearbox was put on, i phoned the original mechanic and he told me that they must have made a mistake at the breakers yard (hmm yeah right) anyway is there a code that i can tell the mechanic to ask for when getting the gearbox? its a 085 gearbox right? is there any other code that i would need to give the breakers?

theres usually a 3 letter code stamped in the casing - on mine you can see it from above at the front (CDA) or similar (ASD now iirc)

it may be a different location on a different style box but if you have the original code let me know the replacement code and ill check the ratios/diff for ya

found a way using spreadsheets to compare boxes when i changed mine as i went for a stronger but longer ratio
