the other day my car wouldnt start at work! i replaced the dizzy cap, rotor arm and spark plugs and it ran fine for a few days. then all of a sudden i was driving and the rev counter flew round as if the engine was redlining and then flew back round to zero(the engine didnt actualy rev) and the car just cut out! had a look and it had burned the rotor arm out and the dizzy cap had a load of yellow/white powder in it. it has gone throuh quite a few dizzy caps in the past so theres obviously a bigger problem somewhere! any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Im not 100% but I think your hall sender is faulty.

That sits in the distributor itself and tells the ecu and rev counter display what the rev speed is.

Im thinking that the ecu thought you were giving high revs when you were not, so there might be some kind of mismatch causing voltages through the dizzy cap/rotor arm at the wrong times? causing scortching.

Its only a theory but seems to make sense with the rev counter going up all of a sudden.

I hesitate because another dizzy is about 70 notes.

i just checked to make sure on my other post, the hall sender sends the rev info to the ecu and also your rev counter.

seems a big coincidence to have the rev counter go up and all the dizzy cap etc the burn out at the same time. so it has to be linked to the revs going up in some way.

the hall sender seems to fit the bill, as i say distributors arent cheap and really its easier to get a new distributor rather than try and replace the sender.

Its **** thats why... only joking mate.

I think changing the whole dizzy could be a good idea, as its constantly been eating caps and arms for the last few months, but there are other under lying problems. Money no object, I would have changed plugs, coil, leads and dizzy but you need to draw the line at where you stop spending.

Getting it started is the main thing, the dizzy could be playing havoc with the ECU (kinda like a crank position sensor would) if it does have an inbuilt sensor but I don't know how advanced the Mk2 ECU system is?
