My FR Superchipped - Clutch slip.

I bought an FR yesterday that had already been superchipped. The car drives well and has plenty of poke. It doesn't actually feel that fast over my old tdi sport, but I think thats down to it being a lot smoother than the Mk3.

The only complaint is the torque in bigger gears lower down (4th,5th and 6th) is causing the clutch to slip. Now the cars only done 17k so I am a little dissapointed to say the least.

The chap I bought the car off said he was told it would slip from cold, but not when warm. That was from superchips themselves. In reality it still slips when the engine and clutch are warm.

I read a bit about tuning the PD engine over the last week and had planned to have a custom map put in mine. The SC map seems breathless at the top end as well as affecting the fuel consumption. 48mpg steady Eddy driving.

Whats superchips custom service like? Would they alter my map for me as its affecting the clutch.

Also the cars still in Warrenty, would this cover the clutch over a limited mileage?

A few pics.

Any thoughts on what I should do with the map?!

Cheers

Im getting a map specifically written for me, not going for full out 200bhp like some other, instead slightly less torque to save the clutch. Will cost me under £300.

It sounds like he has been giving it some beans or you have.

i ran my Fr Tdi fairly hard but with sympathy for the clutch for 12000 miles at 186bhp and had no problem with the clutch, it was only the day that i part ex'd it that i managed to shag the clutch fully, And that was driving liek a complete C**t trying to wreck it as much as possible, you know what its like when the car ain't yours anymore.

You need to use the lower gears more and drop down instead of being lazy.

However a lot of owners have simply uprated the clutch, but looking at around 500 mark for that from what i have seen.

PS i doubt a different map would make much differnce over the superchips one, as its a diesel they do get breathless at top end, peak torque is low down and so is BHP, anything over 4500-5000 is just being too lazy to change up a cog.

Yes I saw the uprated clutch option. However, alot of people on here have mentioned torque limiting at lower rpms and running more power higher up instead which sounds like a better idea to me.

I'll have to give superchips a call I guess. :(

My old Tdi Sport was a 110 and chipped that seemed to pull upto 4k and beyond. The FR feels like its all dead and buried at 3500 rpm. I might get a power a run to see what its up to.

Also do they all give off a strange induction note at around 2000-2000rpm? Thats regardless of throttle angle as well.

Just to note, my FR is stock and 3.5k put your foot down and it gives a big roar (least thru the lower gears - sound) and takes off, 4th, 5th and 6th it still pulls well over 3.5k.....

Insurance would have my arse if i remapped and my clutch is playing up as it is at times stock....let alone mapped - game over! :(

Strangely my clutch seems to have settled down. Insurance wouldn't know about a remap. Dealers are doing them without even advertising the fact these days.

True, but im saving for a wedding so kinda no chance lol + my FR is used for work so its going to rack up the miles.

Mark....forgotten his forum name, red 05 FR custom code remap running about 170bhp n goodness knows what amount of torque. He took me n my lady out for a spin telling us his turbo was acting up and not kicking in till over 3-4k! but i tell thee it went like stink! from both bottom end and top.

I would recommend custom code, but if i were going to get a map hmm i have also looked at upsolute as they where a lil cheaper and also get good reviews (good dealer down here in kent).

BTW, i like the car, same colour as mine:D
