Mufflerectomy test!

Hi all,

I've got a Magnex Catback system on my MK4 pd100. Its a decent system and has a deep throaty noise on acceleration and not tractor like on tickover. However, it does'nt have that turbo whistle at idle or loud 'whoosh' when changin through the gears, so im contemplating removing the back box for a straight pipe, as i've actually heard this set-up on a Mk 4 fr on tickover, which sounded rather awesome . My question is, would removing the back box and havin a drive around, if possible, be a good guage of what a mufflerectomy sounds like.

Cheers for ya help!!

do u mean taking the backbox off, driving for a bit then either getting a proper mufflerctomy or putting the std backbox on?? i think thats what you mean.... if so sort of...
I did this and it gave me a resonable idea but once the pipe was fitted it sounded a lot quieter inside the car, nicer on tickover and then the woosh through gearchanges is crazy loud now lol.... i know that tom has got one on his ibiza and his sounds very nice, not to much woosh :p (he wont like that comment) but it sounds a lot more throatier than mine...

hope this is some help

cheers

For a short test maybe OK, but don't drive like that for long - remember there's hot exhaust gas coming out of the pipe, and you'll end up starting to melt underseal & stuff if you just drive round with the rear silencer pulled off for any length of time.
I'd check how close the joint is to the fuel tank first....

Also you might get more booming than you would if the pipe exited under/behind the rear bumper as it normally would.

Thanks guys,
1.9 Stefan thats exactly what im contemplating, just that im wasting a few pounds tryin to get the exhaust note right, inside and out. My original magnex was too loud/boomy in the cabin ,so got a centre silencer put in courteousy of Pipecraft. It's more of a performance silencer, ie straight through with perforations and damping material ,so i guess it would never do as good a job at silencing as the original Seat fitted part.
I would imagine a five to eight minute run down the dual carraigeway next to me would make my mind up. Don't wanna go melting stuff!!

when i removed just the back box, still had the cat, it didnt make the whoosh sound, but when i removed the cat it did, and oh boy its loud, i love seeing peoples heads turn when i change gear lol, but my mates blue 130 (now hybrid) he just removed the back box, still had cat and it whooshed, i think my cat was ****3d anyway lol, but my mates ibiza 130 has straight through and it doesnt whoosh, oh well, im sure if you remove the back box, it will whoosh aslong as your cat is in good condition ;)

Once you go hybrid and get rid of the 1749 you will lose the whoosh. Better to remove the cat like brad and I have done its really loud. People look at me all the time. But then they did (before I went hybrid) when I had the 1749.

I lost mine when I went hybrid and its based on the 150 keeping the exhaust side stock but using the comp housing and turbine from the 2.5 tdi.

When I had my magnex fitted I noticed it made a light hissing noise at idle.
Since the decat it sounds like a snake on steroids!

How do you mean like a whoosh when changing gear, like the sound from a blow off valve?
Mine dones make any noise when changing gear but i love the sound of the turbo spool when driving along :) n then when you boot it it roars.

Thats with a turbo back milltek and hybrid
