Mounting a sat-nav

Where does anyone mount their sat-navs? I've got a garmin nuvi and find it a bit too far away on the windscreen and the wires/adaptor make it look really untidy.

Is it possible to hard wire it in? What about mounting on the dash? Any pics? What is the tomtom pre-install like?

Still trying to find a good position to mount my Navman in it's Brodit holder, not much of an issue for mounting it's just running the cable for hard wiring. Too much will be on show for my liking.

Once i get around to looking at this properly i will see if it can be done without drilling too much and i will post some pics.

I find that putting the tomtom on the side window is pretty good for its use, however having the wire hang either across the steering wheel or door isnt great if you are using the cigarette lighter for power.
Maybe an extension lead behind the drivers seat and along the door sill and up?
Or send the wire through a dash vent maybe?

I use the 653715 ProClip mount made by Brodit (for image see http://www.brodit.com/images/270/653715.jpg) with Brodit's 215103 Mount with tilt swivel (for the TomTom One).

This puts the sat-nav on the left hand side of the radio, which I find much more comfortable than mounting on the window (it tended to get in the way). Also, you can run a wire from the rear cigarette lighter socket along the center console (stuff the wire up the gap in the console on the passenger side, between the carpet and plastic console) straight to the sat-nav. It is relatively neat, and the wire does not get in the way.

Is there more than one?

Yeah, I've got a cigarette lighter socket just behind and between the driver and passenger seat, below the CD storage slots in the centre console.

I mount my Navman F20 onto the drivers door window, it means it is closer to hand and easier to read, plus it's not obscuring any of the windscreen.

As I only use it once in a while, having the cable looped over the top of the steering cowling doesn't cause an issue.

I keep trying to mount it on the smooth part of the radio, but it never stays in place more than a minute or so.

I've got the same problem, thinking about buying a sat-nav (again) but not sure where to fit it.

The Garmin unit I had before got stolen out of the Celica, its not just the loss of the sat nav but the permanent damage to the car as well. Now I want to be able to leave no trace of having a sat nav when I park up.

Not keen on anything that mounts to the air vents as I've had air vents damaged by fitted things to them before.

It looks to me as if SEAT has put no thought into where the 12 volt socket is placed.

Has anyone mounted right at the front of the centre console in the gap there?

I agree - Brodit is the best. They do a couple of mounts for the mk2, I got mine clipped just to the left of the steering wheel, nice and close, can check it without havin to look too far from the road. The swivel mount is worth paying the extra couple of quid for too, it's amazing the difference a few degrees of tilt can make.

I got a vent mounting kit for my Tom Tom, It just clips into the fins on the vent in the centre console and the power runs down the side of the centre tunnel to the cigar lighter.
Looks good, is easily removed - leaving no signs of a sat nav in the vehicle, (no rings on the glass) and it can still get really good reception.

The vent mount kit comes as part of the approved accessories alternative mounting kit from Tom Tom or ebay etc.

Tis done, just finished off hard wiring this morning as the heavens opened up yesterday afternoon and spoiled the last part of the install.

Brodit vent mount for Navman ICN520 plus all hard wired into fuse panel, pleased with outcome. Obviously if anybody has the winter pack feeding the coax through the same point won't work..:)

How have you made the hole in that blank panel? Is it a part or have you done it yourself? Looks like a really neat option to me.

I drilled through the blanking plate in situ as i don't have the winter pack and located a gromit for the coax cable. When the time comes to move on i'll either put a blanking gromit in or get another blanking plate from the stealers.

Overall i'm happy with the way things have worked out..;)

Ahh, looks like it's molded from the pictures. I'd love to hard wire my garmin in but wouldn't have a clue how to get it rigged into the fuse box and stuff.

It's pretty straight forward, if you want to look at installing as i have you will need to take the radio unit out first, this will then enable you to start looking at where to start with the coax. All you then need to find is an earth and a switched live, plenty of options in the fuse panel and your hand book will tell you which number is which...

What i did:

When i bought my mobile phone holder it came with a plastic base.

I stuck this plastic base on to the top flat serfice of my dash and then i attatched the window sticky thing for my satnav to that and so its mounted nicley.
