Hi Guys, can anyone who has one, tell me which type they have and where they got it from.

I'm not sure whether to go for a roof or boot mounted one.

And have you had any problems with it?

Probably looking to carry only 1 bike, but maybe 2 in the future.

Thanks

I have a boot mounted one but havent used it yet. However we used it on the alhambra and it's a great fit and supports a lot of weight. Personally I wouldn't put more than 2 bikes on as the hooks which are fed into the boot have to grab on somewhere and any lip is a bit thin on our cars!

I wouldn't go boot mounted.
They can scratch, particularly if the car isn't clean.
Problems with them blocking the rear lights, need a trailerboard and somewhere to plug it in.
They don't lock on, so if you go out cycling for the day you have to take it off and put it in the boot, then refit it afterwards.
You can't open the boot with one on, or at least, it's not easy.

Roofbar Downsides I can think of:
Roofbar ones are typically more expensive, but it's easier to upgrade to >2 bikes. Roofbars can be used for carrying other shizz.
I haven't been on a ferry with bikes on roofbars for some time, but last time I did it cost more for the extra height.
There's a risk of muck/scratches on the roof, particularly if you mountainbike. You do tend to lean against the car when you lift the bike up, unless you put the bike right to one side.

Have a look on www.roofbox.co.uk for either, particualrly in their "Bargains" section.

Im using the Thule roof bars and the Thule Freeride bike holder, i was in the same position as you last year and wasnt sure what to get. Havent had a problem with it so far either but whatever you do dont get them from Hal-frauds they quoted me nearly £200 for what i have, instead i had a look around on the net and picked both of them up for £140 delivered!!

I borrowed a boot mount one form a mate and it popped one corner of my spoiler up, as from what i can see the spoiler over hangs the actuall metal boot frame and hangs on the spoiler rather than the boot, it was solid but has also scratched my boot,

i'm now looking for a roof mount one, does anyone know what feet fit the ibiza roof rails?

Make sure you shop around cos i asked in a bike shop at the weekend and they told about £400 all in roof bars and bike carrier, i nearly had a heart attack when he said how much!!!
