Mot Failed on noise!!

Last week i had to take the Leon down for its MOT, Its passed every year with the same Piper exhaust with the sports cat but this year its failed because its to loud!!.

What a pain in the arse, When did this come change in the mot come in?

Does anyone have a standard system that i may borrow for the MOT??

What levels arr acceptable and what level was your car?
What CAT do you have 200 or 100 CELL??

The refusal of an MOT certificate says

Exhaust noise is cn average clearly in excess of that emitted by a similar vehicle fitted with a standard silencer in average condition

I'm running with a 100 cell CAT

It doesnt say if there is an exceptable db limit

Realy so if i took it back to the place its been passed before they would pass it??

Its just the preference of the tester

Possibily. My missus' 106 once failed on "brake discs too thin". When questioned on his ability to read thousandths of a mm with his eye, he backed down and passed it

Yeah it is exactly that, based on the noise of a similar standard car.

Try another mot cente for advice on the noise, some will pass it, some won't.

As Lee said try another centre, none of my cars ever failed on noise and I had some noisy bits of crap when i was younger

good thing i never took my saxo to guys like these. they'd need earmuffs if they wanted to test the sound.dont thnk i'd pass with flying colours either

my car is over 100 ecibels on the tester and it passes with no problem
mine is a diesel and its stupi loud

It is only a perception, so you could argue the case.

Method of inspection:
assess subjectively the effectiveness of the silencer in reducing exhaust noise to a level considered to be average for the vehicle.

Reason for Rejection:
a silencer in such condition, or of such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a silencer in average condition.

Basically - they may fail it if the tester feels that it's too noisy for a similar vehicle. Not the same vehicle 12 months ago

oh i see!! is there not a legal limit for the roa?? cos i would have thought if its loud but under the legal limit for the road it cant be failed??
i might be wrong but seems silly to fail it if its under the legal limit..
a bit like your tires look too worn its a fail yet measure above the legal limit??

It's a subjective fail... but it's based on your car as standard

Basically - VOSA are responding to the wishes of the majority of people who are pissed off with the chavs running about with noisey exhausts at 2am.

Now I'm sure you don't fall into that category, but the reasoning behind it is that your car was type approved with a certain sound level & that's roughly what they're looking for.

If you don't agree with the MOT tester, contact VOSA & they'll check it for you. And you'll still fail

I can't believe this. A maximum limit must be in place surely, to be measured with a calibrated sound meter at x distance. Someone's opinion is a joke as we all percieve sound levels differently........ this could only happen in the motor trade.
I do appreciate the clamp down on excessively noisey exhausts though.
