MOT fail on emissions/lambda sensor

Just wanted to stick up a quick info post regarding my MOT this morning. Got a phone call just before midday to say that the car had failed it's emissions test, it was 0.6 on the CO rather than the required 0.2. My options were to have the sensors cleaned, replaced, or at the very worst, have the cat replaced.

I obviously went for the cheaper option and had the sensors cleaned. Luckily this was enough, it brought the CO down from 0.6 to 0.05. Unfortunately, I now have an engine management light up to say the lambda sensor heater has failed and I need to replace one. However, it passed the MOT so I got the car back. It cost me £50 to have the car run, sensors cleaned and then retested, so not too bad.

So if anyone has an MOT failure with similar issues, perhaps a simple clean will help. I don't know how they're cleaned though, ultrasonic maybe? Or perhaps even a rinse through with IPA or something?

On another note, my noisy bearings have now gone through two MOT's, and the clonking on the front suspension did not fail either. So neither of those ongoing problems have actually been found yet.

So I'm all good for another twelve months! :)

Not tried clearing it yet, still technically 'at work' so not got chance to get the fault code or anything. I suspect it won't clear, it went to the garage with no light, and it's come on after they've done something, so to me that seems a bit permanent. Had it been something temporary I wouldn't put it past them to clear it and walk away whistling...

Then again, thinking about it, I also wouldn't be surprised if they put it on deliberately to get £300 out of me, and it will clear no problem! :)

(And yes, they were asking nearly £300 to change BOTH sensors. It's not essential work, only one actually needs to be changed, and it's not £300 worth!)
