Which engine does the Mk5 1.6 Sport petrol use?
I seem to be having trouble working it out - is it one of the older VAG engines they used up?
It only seemed to be sold for a couple of years. Quoted at around 105hp.

I had a 1997 Cupra Sport 8V for 15 nearly all happy years, and fancy going back to an Ibiza after my current boring Golf Mk5 1.6 FSi.

I want to avoid the FSi engine again - is the Ibiza 1.6 an FSi or not?

I want something in the spirit of my Cupra. i.e. as simple as possible.
I don't want DSG, I'd rather not have TSi. I don't really want a diesel, especially not with a DPF.
1.4 a bit too slow but the 1.6 might just be enough.

I know there isn't anything as simple and torquey as my old Cupra, but I'm struggling to find anything that appeals to me, the 1.6 Sport is about the only thing I can see.

Don't know exactly, but just to point out, there is also a N/A 1.4 100bhp Mk4 Ibiza which may fit your criteria. Harder to find, and I'm not sure how 'quick' it is. The standard 75/85bhp Mk4 was certainly a bit lazy, but I've heard people say the 100 is different enough.

To be honest I don't think I've ever seen a post about the 1.6 petrol and didn't know it existed!

I'd really be looking for something newer than a Mk4, but I'd probably go for a pre-DPF diesel if I was. Or even a really tidy 2.0 petrol sport which is basically my old Cupra 8v. There just doesn't seem to be the options I'd like in the mk5.

I too didn't realise there was 1.6 petrol mk5 till I spotted it in Parkers specs when looking at 1.4 figures.
I only found a handful for sale on Autotrader.

I'm really wishing I'd looked after my Cupra better. I really miss the low down torque & throttle response. And the simplicity of it.

Think they used it on Fabia, noticed a 1.6 petrol of that listed for a while too.
Also used in the Polo 1.6 Sport 2006-2008
Looks like it probably is same as Mk4 Golf.
Odd that they went back to an older engine instead of the FSi - could it have been designed just as FSi problems were at their worst?
Stopgap till the TSi engines caught up?
