Thanks for the email Flapper.

For everyone else, I think if you have a 256mm setup then to change it to a 280mm setup you just need the caliper carriers/frame and bigger disks obviously

Nope, from EKTA drawings the calipers appear to be the same :D I will be moving to 280mm brakes when I have the money. You can get slotted and drilled 280mm disks for 70quid :)

Im really confused now, Ive been on some brake parts sites, disks for the 1.6 as per the sites are 20mm thick but the calipers are 13mm

Also the cupra calipers and disks are 22mm thick, so would new calipers be needed then?

that's the difference between solid and vented disks that the 1.6 has listed - what you need to do first is check what make / type / disk size that you have on the car to start with

239mm-(12mm solid or 20mm vented std)
girling 280 calipers
girling 280 carriers/frames
girling pads
280mm discs (22mm wide)
256/280 bearing carrier assy/stub axle

256mm-(20mm vented std)
girling 280 calipers (poss use 256 but tbc)
girling 280 carriers/frames
girling pads
280mm discs (22mm wide)

bearing carrier/stub axle is not required as the standard 256mm one has the right mountings to match the 280mm calipers/frame

now although 256mm lucas calipers look the same they run a 2mm thinner disc than the 280mm and i believe the aperture is also smaller in the caliper.
I have been told the 256 calipers are wide enough to clear the wider 280 discs but every frame/carrier kit i have had my hands on so far has come complete with calipers anyway and i keep forgetting to try the old ones on there but for 1mm i would imagine it was the case.

although not set in stone mk2 280mm gti calipers were painted red as standard so safe to say red ones are indeed 280mm but as anyone can paint a caliper anytime don't rely on it being true.

and be careful selecting kits as the 256/280 to look at by eye looks the same it's the location of the mountings on the carriers/frames that makes all the difference diameter wise

if you can hang on a bit i might have an idea for a cheap 4 pot conversion ;)

literally twice as heavy as and not as top notch as brembo's but will be different for sure but i reckon could work out same/cheaper than sourcing 280's

Just had a thought, which I had neglected before, will 280mm brakes fit under 15" wheels?

i'd be interested in that cheap 4 pot conversion, how much work would be needed and can you get a rough price up flapper?? will it fit underneath the standard cupra alloys also??

basing this on standard lucas 280x22mm Gti Brakes as a base

quick update on weight wise apparently same shipping as std caliper without slider frame but as yet i would like to weigh myself to confirm that so not far off there

standard caliper is single sliding 54mm piston / test one is 4x40mm

couple of pages later have worked out it is only approx 10% more piston area compared to std so not much but an improvement for testing to verify at least ( 4581.04 > 5027.20 )

disc size is 280 discs as the base as above at moment but fitting will tell me if larger can be used as i reckon the offset on 305mm might be better suited to this one

just to note as i haven't measured it yet but upgrading brakes you will have to think about standard master cylinder also and rear drums/discs etc

larger piston area will mean more power but a longer pedal to some degree

anyway - collecting a few parts some needed some to play and try so hopefully weekend ill get some time to play
