Mk2 Cupra & Cupra R differences (flame suit on!)

I know it's probably not the best thread to start as such a new member but I HAVE used the search function with as many combinations of words as I could think of but it's mainly comparing the Cupra and FR that pops up the most often. Funny enough, most of the replies I have been reading up on consists of members just replying with "use the search" which isn't very helpful compared to the forums I've been a part of over the years.

I mean if anyone could direct me to somewhere other than wikipedia with a list of differences of the 2 cars then I'd appreciate it - but otherwise, I welcome any info you guys could point out.

I've noticed that the Cupra R is quite rare from my findings and priced considerably higher than the Cupra. I know there is a slight power gain on the Cupra R and few cosmetic changes but I can't understand the difference in price. If there is a lot of underlying extras like what the Evo FQ400 does for Mitsubishi's range then fair play, I'll understand but other than what I know already, I'd like to be educated as a potential buyer.

So far, I know the 2 cars both use the very tuneable K04 turbo, the Cupra R has stronger internals as used in the S3 and Golf R? The Cupra R has centre twin exhaust with rear diffuser, 261bhp vs 237bhp.....and extra R badges scattered around.

A thread to end all threads hopefully :)

youve pretty much hit the nail on the head

R Badges
Leather Seats with gloss black rear's and R Badges
Different Intercooler
Rear Diffuser (UK Only)
Remus Exhaust (UK only)
19" Potenza Supercopa Wheels
25bhp more
"R" Badge on the clocks
Gloss Black Rear Spoiler
"R" Engine Cover with powered by SEAT Sport on it

in a few years when there both getting old, The R will be the one that holds its money slightly better, Why? because people like to have "Special" Edition cars. The MK2 LCR is nowhere near as good as the MK1 LCR, by as good i mean, The MK1 LCR was completely different than the MK1 LC, MK2 LCR isnt that different than the MK2 LC

But when it comes down to it in a few years everybody will want the "R"

The Cupra R cost £5k more than the Cupra when new for nothing much more than cosmetics.

Everything mechanical is the same between the Cupra and Cupra R pretty much except the intercooler. Both use the same CDL engine and K04 turbo.

Being honest, I didn't and still don't want a Cupra R as I don't like the leather seats in the Cupra R. Had the Cupra R been fitted with DSG an LSD, 4x4 or a bespoke body kit, decent brakes etc, it would have been worth the premium price IMO.

Remap both cars and they end up as quick and reliable as the other as they share the same engine, turbo and brakes.

Of course there are and always will be badge snobs - I enjoy seeing those guys disappear out the rear window of my lower spec Cupra though ;)

i agree with Al! They really needed to make it a different car for example

ST vs RS
GTI vs Golf R

Leather seats are nice but not good for a daily car, mine are cracking and sagging already they need alot of work to keep them looking good, Im also not a fan of the diffuser

Reason i bought the LCR? because the dealer offered me a decent deal on it

I like the Cupra R diffuser being honest, and put one on mine :). All leons need a bootlid spoiler too in my opinion, and the skirts look ace too.

The Cupra was too close to the FR looks wise, just as it was too close to the Cupra R under the skin.

That will be the reason why SEAT discontinued the Cupra and put the Cupra price tag on the FR then :w4nk:.

I hope they dont screw around making people wait for details on the range topper on the MK3.

More interested in the name of the model and the mechanical spec. I wonder if the 2.0T will live on in the MK3 and if VAG will allow DSG to go in to the fastest models and heaven forbid, 4x4, Brembo brakes, a bespoke body kit and even the 2.5T

Interesting. That gives enough time to have a new car for 2-3 years before it comes out. I wonder if it would be worth the wait.....

Nails bit hit on the head in this thread,

Just an added note is "most" cupra r were sold with the tech pack and this became standard in my12 cars, I personally wouldn't by an r without it

I would not have bought the LCR had it not been for the discount I got as I too don't believe it was worth a 5k premium

My cupra came with tech pack, leather, btcc kit ,black alloys etc etc, It now is chipped, barring black seat backs and a bigger inter cooler , it may as well be a cupra r. Oh forgot the wheels.... He he.

Do you mean the bolsters?? I guess i must agree with you, but I love them and am prepared to not abuse them in an 'everyday' sort of way.

But they are 'model' seats and you can't just get in and out of them like regular car seats.

If its any consolation the fabric on the facelift Cupra must have been taken from a cheap carpet - it wears very very quickly. My 2007 Cupra never eer had that issue.
