Just wanted to spark a wee debate.

I have had both a Mk1 Petrol Cupra and now a Mk2 2.0L Tdi Sport. Apart from the extra oomph with the Cupra I feel that the Mk2 is superior in every way especially the handling of the car which is night and day.

Have to total agree.

When you read in the motoring press how much the difference a multilink rear suspension improves things over a torsion beam. You can see why they did it on the Focus over the old Escort and why VW followed them with the Golf mk5 platform. I’m also surprised that Honda dropped it on the new Civic, especially after the good reviews that the old Civic got.

I test drove the Mk2 TFSI sport before I bought the LCR. The new Leon is better engineered, interior is much nicer, the ride / handling is better and the new engine has much smoother power delivery.

However, I bought the LCR cause it looks the danglies and for some strange reason I much prefer the old school experience (turbo lag, rock hard suspension and noiser exhaust). Gonna have to grow up soon though......

Totally agree on the handling - Mk1 cupra is definitely showing its age there.

I suppose my problem is that I had the Cupra (which the Mrs now has) and a couple of months ago i drove the 2 litre fsi she had as a courtesy car so we are not comparing like with like.

Apart from the disappointing engine, one thing we were both disappointed with was the plastics in new interior (extent and quality of), especially the glove box and surrounding area. Below average. Another would be the 'halfords' touches to the new fr - gearknob etc. Not my cup of char.

But i agree overall the new has more pros than the old. Alas not enough for me to buy one.
