Hi,

im wanting to uprgrade my speakers in my mk1 Leon FR, ive been looking on web and ive found a selection speakers that i might buy, i beleive that the front and rear door speakers are the same.

to gain the best sound would i be best changing both front and rear for the same speakers or should i put differant in front to rear??

has anyone got a simular setup or reccomend anything?

Thanks in advance

Ben

You'll be best off matching the two sets, you want 6.5" Components but you'll need adaptors as well to get the best fit. Any decent stereo shop should be able to help you.:D

Suppose this really depends on how often you have rear passengers.
I don't often and prefer to listen to music from in front of me.

Personally I would forget the rears and spend the money on better front speakers and a Dynamat sound proofing kit to firm up/damp the front doors.
Just imho. :)

I'm with steve here.

I have a fully upgraded system & kept the standard rear speakers wired to the H/U (Front comps are amped up) but fade them out when I dont have rear passengers as it muddies the soundstage a fair bit.

The more money you can spend on the fronts the better...you sit there & it's all for your benefit isnt it?? so might as well make them as good as you can ;)

Also like Steve said Sound Deadening will make a huge difference to the sound so make sure you dont scrimp on that (I have 2 layers per door with 4 layers directly around the speaker mounting & 2 layers behind the speaker itself on the outer skin) I used Second Skin Damplifier pro for mine (A bulk pack is about £130 but contains 36Sq Ft of deadening so more than enough really)

Did you have a budget in mind for the speakers anyway??

My front speakers (which will hopefully be installed THIS year) retail at £3200 :-o
Thank god I didnt pay that!
I have stock speakers in the rear. ;)
At least 5 sheets of Dynamat extreme will be going into each door.

2 layers on the inside of the outer skin
1 layer on the visible side of the inner door panel
1 layer on the inner side of the innder door skin (think that makes sense ;) )

Also MDF/ Steel mounting for the speakers themselves.

I have a bit of work to do!

Lol it's easy to get carried away isnt it??

My front comps were originally £800 a pair (Phoenix G0ld T.i. Elites) but I paid £180 2nd hand ;)

I havent tackled the outer skin yet...only done the inner panel with 2 layers & managed to squeeze my hand through the speaker whole in the door to apply the layers directly behind the mids ;)
I need to replace my window mech once the weather warms up so I'll be doing the outer skin then...got loads of my Bulk pack left over :)

When we installed my comps we made up MDF baffles for them to mount to...wouldnt have dreamed of using the plastic crap the standard speakers came in, not that you can remove the Standard one's without destroying the plastic things anyway.

One thing I wouldnt be so sure to do is the inner of the door lining like you said...you're gonna have to be really careful that doesnt foul the window when it opens, it will work quite nicely I think but you'll deffinitley need to be wary of where the wondow comes down.

Neil

EDIT - Why on earth did G0ld get starred out when spelt correctly???

Genesis Absolute 3.2 here. Look fab. Should sound fantastic. [B)]
Also have a set of active Rainbow Platinums boxed unused should you know anyone after some ;)

There is a thread on here somewhere where I have linked to a fantastic guide to removing the inner door mechanism including the links to the locks. I will be using that.

I'm copying the work done by Steve at Megawatt. He's done this to a MK 1 Leon.
There are some pic on ICECAVERN.COM of the install and sound proofing he did.

If he can get it right, I'm sure I can bugger it up!

**** **** **** **** hmmmm.... does the same to me! Platinum seems ok though ;)

Hmmmm Genesis Absolute's :drool::drool::love:
I'd love a set of them...absolutley stunning components & you deffinitley wont be let down by them.
I heard some a while back & they were a revolation I'd never heard such crisp clear vocals in a car before.
Simply stunning.

What amps are you running??

Oooh Rainbow Platinums...another set of speakers I covet, shame again they are well beyond my meagre means, I think even second hand I'd never be able to afford them lol

Lol well hopefully you dont bugger it up ;)
I'm sure all will be fine...will look forward to seeing the build pics as you do it.

No idea why G0ld does that lol
Very strange

Sorry for the thread hijack folks.
Normal service will be resumed shortly.

I've currently got Series 3 Genesis amps. (notice a theme here? ;) )

Two Dual Mono's for Mid and Tweeter (would love a DMA)
4 Channel Bridged up for the Mid-Bass (until I can get a DMX)
If I won the lottery tonight I'd have a pair of P15's instead!)

MiniBlock for the sub. (Only a Diamond 10" at the mo until I find something a bit special)

Audison Connections Sonus cabling (apart from RCA's)
Build threads including pics are on ICECAVERN under "Steve's Leon install Diary Parts 1 - 3"

Only things I have installed at the moment are full length 0 Gauge positive and ground cables and full boot and floorpan done with Dynamat extreme.

Lol yes sorry for the hi-jack :redface:

Hmmmm I'd love Dual Mono's wanted them for ages but never been able to save enough for them ;)

I'm currently running..

Genesis Profile 4 for the comps which is being run Active (EQ is all handled by the H/U - Pioneer DEH-p8600MP)
Genesis profile Sub for my 12" Digital Design 2512 @ 2ohm

Does me quite nicely but I do plan on an upgrade to Dual Mono's for the front end or even jump ship & get a couple of DLS A3's ;)

Anyway I'm sure we've taken up enough of the OP's thread ;)
I'm gonna pop over to the Icecavern site now & have a peek at your build diary :)
