Lowering Springs??

I want to lower mine, it desperatley needs it.
Looked on Ebay at springs only (I want coilovers but cant afford) and there is some Jamex ones on there, 40mm drop.
Does anyone know if these are any good??
Also will I need to do anythin to my arches??
My wheels are 17s runnin 215/40/17 tyres.......

does anyone have a standard to 40mm comparison?
I've seen 60mm and it's exactly what I'm looking for but people talk about the 40 still being kinda high at the front.
