Right folks I'll try to explain this as best as I can.

Randomly on Saturday just gone, I was out and about in my 2007 cupra, all of a sudden I noticed when turning right (about a 1/4 of a turn it starts) my car started to make a loud knocking noise.

It seems to be getting worse as well so for now I've parked her on the drive until she goes into my local garage.

I went to a local garage on my way back from work yesterday to get it on the ramps..... The knocking happens when rocking the steering wheel a 1/4 of a turn to the right and back to straight...... Also It only does it with weight on the wheels.

To start with it was only when turning at roundabouts etc, now it does it when going over bumps, as well as steering to the right.

I've checked top mounts & top mount bearings, checked track for ends and all suspension bushes and all good.

It's really loud and doesn't sound good at all.

I've recently had a new bearing fitted into the Hub on the side it's knocking (garage it's going to Friday fitted this)..... It does sound to me as if the noise is coming from the hub with the new bearing in.

The only thing I can think of is maybe the steering rack, I have no steering/eps lights on or anything...... Also rack self centres as it should so I hope it's not.... The garage that looked at it yesterday reckoned it could be the rack.

Any one else had a similar issue?

It's not the usual slight knocking noise that's say a drop link or top mount bearing issue.... Like I say it's knocking so bad that I don't want to drive it until it's diagnosed/fixed.

Any help much appreciated folks.

Well folks I got this issue sorted today

The cause of the noise was the NEW bearing that I had fitted to my cupra a couple of weeks back

Luckily for me they didn't charge me to fit another one

I can't understand how the new bearing was fuked so quickly..... The bell end of a mechanic was trying to say it was my steering rack to start off with.

Oh well least it's sorted

Most likely they damaged it when fitting it, as he was trying to blame something else he probably knew he'd been a bit heavy handed with the hammer or the press when fitting it, as it rare to get a brand new one mis manufactured, although it can happen

I new it wasn't my rack as I'd been round to a mates and had it on the ramps, we checked everything over and apart from slight play in one of the drop links (now changed bothered for good measure).... We couldn't find no issues anywhere.

The noise sounded to us like it was coming from the hub (so likely to be that bearing) and resonating through the dust guard at the back of the brake disc.

The guy who fitted the bearing said the old (well the new one lol) bearing he'd took out again had probably dried out after being left on the shelf to long from the car spares.

After that statement I was out there quick as a flash..... It's safe to say I'll not be going back there lol.

I just hope this other new bearing is fine this time round
