I have just sold my 03 plate to my best mate. 88k miles, full service history and the car is going into limp mode (embarrassing). I have experienced the problem a couple of times over the last year or so. Typical symptoms, on motorway around 3000rpm then it dies - nothing there - scary. It has been on diagnostics when i experienced the problem and shown nothing. As i say sold it to my mate last week and into limp mode two or three times. He has had it on dianostics - pointing to MAF. New bosch fitted - still the same. Back to bosch - money back. Bought a new one from dealer - still the same. Back on dianostics now pointing towards turbo - ouch. Little black smoke but not a lot.

So, where can he source a turbo without major expense bearing in mind that i have agreed to go half on the cost (cant rip a best mate). Is it a big job to change? I have read on this site that it may be that the blades on the turbo may just need the crap cleaning off them however someone has told not to as the blades may be imbalanced. HELP.

I would really appreciate any thoughts or ideas.

maybe it has sticky vains bit then again that would show up on vagcom as boost pressure positive deviation, you could always clean the vains up on the turbo??

yeah agreed, drop the turbo off and give it a clean up then see how it goes, theres info on doing this in the TDI section, have a search.
