hi foilks

Never fails, you get round to sorting 1 problem then another developes, flamin cars doin me head in, :cry:

Just driving along happilly, then for no reason what so ever the engine just cuts out, sometimes it restarts then runs for a while before cutting out again other times it takes a while to get it started using the key but once going it seems to run fine then after another 20 mins or so it starts to cut out again.l

Have checked and cleaned all the earth connections I can see and still it does the same thing, also checked HT leads are on ok and the spark plugs are fine. And new dizzy cap and rotor arm replaced when I first got car

Can any1 help with any solutions as to whats causing it?, have found another thread with what looks like a similar problem and in it someone has mentiond a crank position sensor on same engine( the post lists a 2l 8v golf). wheres that located on engine so i can have look for it.

I'm at a loss to what the problem is and it's driving me nuts:help::help: oh!..............and before any1 asks the engine management light doesn't come on when it happens:confused:

with thanks to whoever can help

still havent found problem

Beginning to think its an electrical fault.

Have replaced fuel filter, air filter and checked out the earth connections from battery and it's still stalling. it's broke down last sunday and wouldn't restart so had to get it towed home.

Got a replacement coil for it yesterday, car started no problem so took it out for a test run and it ran fine for a few miles then once engine got up to normal temperature started cutting out again.

Went to local scrapyard today, made it there eventually after a few stalls and got a replacement fuel pump relay, fitted that while i was there and headed back home only to find the engine cutting out again after a few miles of driving.

Also checked out the wiring round about the fuse box with engine idling but now it aint wanting to cut out, only seems to do it now when the cars moving. So I'm going to take it to a guy I know with a computer and get him to check it out. If he can find the fault I'll mabye put a post in here with what the fault was incase anyone else has or had the same problem.

There is one thing that occasionally happens when it cuts out, the clock and stereo(not Seat stereo) reset themselves.

Finally got the fault found. Got mechanic to put computer on car and it picked up on the camshaft position sensor. The pictures show the old one and the area of wiring that the outer cable has bare wire showing also the plastic bit where the wire goes in to the sensor was broken.

What a job that was trying to get to where the sensor is on the engine. Was a little bit confused at first but through trial and error I eventually got there. Flamin thing sits right in beside the front engine mount next to the oil filter, only way of knowing where it is exactly is to follow the little black wire that goes in behind the filter. So here goes with a brief description on how I went about it.(and a word of warning before anyone attempts it if they have to); DRAIN THE COOLANT FIRST BEFORE YOU START!! or things could get rather messy, I thought it would just be a little trickle of water but obviously not,
I disconnected the 2 hoses from the oil cooler(after a lot of cursing by the awkwardness of where they are, lol), disconnected the inlet hose at the top and the hose just infront of the cooler( best way I found was to use a small or medium size pair of molegrips to grip the clips). Then took off the oil filter. there is a nut that holds the cooler on the underside, a 27mm socket with a universal joint and extension bar was required to get that off. it got a little bit tricky trying to get the cooler out but with a little bit of perserverance and moving the coolant hoses I got there. next up was the oil filter mounting thats was the easiest part to remove, 1 7mm allen key bolt on top and 2 on the bottom, I found it easier getting to them from underneath the car with a little something on the allen key for extra leverage. once that lot was out the way i saw where the sensor was and that was even trickier trying to the that out using a 5mm allen key and a rubber glove(the thin ones mechanics use) to help grip the bolt to get it out. Then a bit of gentle persuasion with a screw driver and out it popped. Reffiting it all was a lot easier that taking it appart an only took me about an hour or 2 including refilling coolant and making sure there was no air trapped then checked the oil level before I restarted the car and it started no problem.

I was a bit pannicky the first few days back driving it and kept expecting it to cut out on me but havent had a single cut out since I repaired it.
