Looking at buying a mk 4 1.9 tdi.....

Hi guys.

On the lookout for a 1.9 TDi 130bhp.

I'm looking at the FR but they seem a bit pricey at around 11 grand.

Is the Sport the same engine? I know its insurance group 7 and the FR is group 9 I presume this is down the styling pack on the FR.

Just a few questions:

1) Best insurance companies for these cars? I'm 19 with 0 no claims 0 accidents, safest area of UK.

2) How does the 1.9 engine react to DTUK or any other tuning boxes?

3) Only thing I don't like about the Ibiza is how high it sits, what the best lowering kits?

4) What should I be aiming to pay for a decent example Sport or FR? Is it worth getting the FR over the Sport?

5) Anything I should look out for when buying one?

cheers, Joel

FR's dont cost 11k matey, there is one on here at the moment for sale, at 8,500 I believe. Insurance group 8 is the pre-facelift.

They are the same engine if you get the PD130 Sport yes. Different gear box etc, been posted many a time.

1. Insurance, just shop around tbh.

2. Tuning = REMAP = 170bhp+ and 280lb/ft+

3. I have Eibach which does the job (see decals thread for piccies)

4. Anything from £6000 to £9000 id say for a Sport/FR

5. Dont be put off by a few high miles, the PD130 engine is good for millions!

Good luck :D

I am really really interested in the Ibiza. It seems to have it all.

Good looks, a meaty engine, fuel economy.

How do they handle?

And regarding the remap, how much would that cost and how would the standard internals and clutch, brakes hold up to that?

I have a Corsa 1.2 SXI at the moment. I have modified it subtly and at the moment it looks great, but I need something with a bit more pepper in its tail!

I think the PD130 handles well in the Ibiza. Once you get some coilovers, strut braces, wider tyres (also better tyres) id say it can keep with the best of them...

I think once youve learnt how the heavy front end needs to be thrown into the corner and the power is so low down, its good fun aswell!

Remaps range from 300ish to 500ish depending on what you want etc etc

Internals are good for alot from what ive heard, most ive seen a PD130 running tho is around 225bhp. Clutch is good for 300lb/ft std. But brakes imho are poor and need upgrading to 312mm at the first chance (I did this!)

This is how it looks like a random road in germany :

Enjoy :D

I was asking the same questions a couple of months ago just before I got my car and I decided to go for the sport model.

1) I would go for Admiral/Elephant/Bell (same company). They all cost around £1000 but more if you declare any modifications.

2) Remaps are the way to go. Revo and Jabbasport are the most well known companies, costing £500 and £300 respectively

3) You should be able to get some FK or Koni coilovers for around £400/500.

4) There isn't a difference performance wise betweeen the sport and fr. I would (and did) go for the sport and use any money you saved on tuning it.

5) There aren't any specific values, but as long as you buy one which has a full seat service history and has been recently serviced you should be fine.

I have just bought a 55 plate FR a month ago from my local VW Dealer  with 11,000 miles on the clock and got 6 months tax and £500 knocked off the price and paid a total of £9750.

1) I use Directline on line, £450 a year

2) Haven't done yet

3) Haven't done yet

4) £6000 to £10000 (Top end figure for an FR)

5) The PD130 engine is fantastic and like T.Spark said it goes for miles and miles.

I wasn't fussed at the Ibiza's when i was looking around then i drove one and ended up buying one. It has grown so much on me since as i couldn't get use to the way the front looked, but the engine and the torque it has, has helped me through.

I'll be keeping mine for a long while yet!!:)

I think the tunability of the engine would keep me interested for a long time.

I'd keep my corsa if tuning it was viable. But to get any serious power you have to spend stupid amounts of money and end up having terrible mpg so its not really worth it.

It can easy get to around 190bhp and 300lb/ft without much other than map, exhaust, fmic etc.

I think the front can look nice with a few mods... here is mine :

£10495 in the window - so they should come down a fair bit from that
