Lighten and Balanced Flywheel

Right after sorting the xmas shopping out, got sum money left over and thought I would get a present for the Ibiza :)

Gonna get the TSR 4-1 Manifold that's been mentioned in another thread and was also thinking of getting a lighten and balanced flywheel as all you cupra sport/GTi owners know that it takes a while for the engine to rev down.

Talking about this to a mate the other night, put an idea in my head that even though a lighten and balanced flywheel would help the car rev a bit better it might decrease the torque. As in for example driving up a hill on the motorway I may need to change down a gear as the momentum of the lighten flywheel will not be as much as the standard one (if u get that).

The only engine mods I'm going be doing or already done is, TSR manifold, sports cat and system, panel filter & drilled box, maybe this flywheel and finally a remap. So really with just them mods is there any need for a lighten and balanced flywheel or just do that if I go for cams?

Would someone like to enlighten me?

Cheers, Dave :)

there is now justin, and a lightened flywheel will make you struggle more than normal on steep hills, especially if youre tooling it against something decent.

Over there
I guess one downside would be she'll spin up those tyres easier lol

Out of interest how much is a lightened flywheel going to set you back, once its sorted and fitted I mean ?
If its in anyway shape or form a large sum I wouldn't bother and would spend it on something else like cams, petrol or NOS lol :) Unless someone else has done it as recommends it.

Will be checking this thread with interest as to hear the downsides other than financial, as I would have thought the cons would out weigh the fact the engine is more free to rev ?

wouldn't getting some headwork along with the 4-1 be a better investment?unless of course you need a clutch in the near future, then get it done while the box is off

TSR Performance now does a 4-1 manifold for RHD Ibiza.

If I get the flywheel I have the clutched changed the same time might as well, since it's all off and I forgot to mention in the list of my plans some headwork ;)

I emailed TSR before and they quoted me £48 for a flywheel, fitting it I will get my mate who’s a mechanic to do it so shouldn't cost me too much. I'm just more concerned about the performance, would anyone recommend I do this?

A lightened flywheel will NOT affect torque, or cause you to not be able to get up hills! (only the playstation GT generation believe otherwise!) Although there will be less energy stored in the flywheel, it also takes the same reduction in energy to accelerate it, hence no change to static torque figure. However when accelerating in a low gear, where the crank will be relatively low geared to the wheels, and hence it's radial acceleration will be high, it will significantly reduce the wasted energy as compared to the std flywheel. As a rough approximation, multilpy the mass removed from the flywheel by the final drive a gear ratio, and this would be the rough effect as a reduction in vehicle mass of this magnitude. i.e 1 kg off flywheel in 1st gear (say 3 to1) with a 4 to 1 final drive = 12kg of car mass equivalent.

Obviously as you go up the gears the effect reduces.

With regard to the slow engine decels, start and warm the engine, pull the plug off the IAV (idle air valve) (might stall at this point so may need accelerator to keep it running) rev to 6000rpm and snap you foot off the accelerator, the rate of engine decceleration will now by simply that absorbed by engine friction / pumping losses. the std EMS will have a significant "dashpot" action to slow the rate of torque reversal, to limit drivetrain oscilations/shunt and any potential rear of car overtaking front situtations!.

(you will get a EMS error code set when you disconnect the IAV, so you will need to clear this after the test)

So would you recommend getting a lighten flywheel now? or is it actually worth it when all I'm gonna be doing at the moment is a manifold, sports cat, exhaust system and panel filter;

And just wait till later on down the line when I do remap (maybe headwork or headwork & cams).

Sorry for the hundred and one questions, don't know much about this area
