Leon mk1 standard sound system ratings..?

Hello everyone!

I have JUST signed up, even before I even have my Leon. I just haven't collected it yet. As such, I am looking up everything I can to try and distract myself from the fact that I actually don't have it outside!

I've looked everywhere, but can find little information on the standard speakers fitted to the car. I have the SX spec, if that makes any difference. It still has the standard head unit (CD) fitted too.

Lots of people say that the standard speakers sound alright with just a new head unit, can anyone confirm this? I had a really nice setup in my last car, and want to get something similar again.

Also, I could find nothing on the ratings of the original speakers or headunit! Is there anything written on them?

Last but not least, is there any way at all I can keep the LCD display from the dash display working with a new head unit, even if it is one particular model?

I know some of this is out there in other places, but I thought while I am asking one question, I may as well ask many. Answers to any would be great!

Thanks very much in advance.

p.s. you all have great taste in cars...

i had over a grands worth of stereo in my previous car (amps/speakers/subs) and all i have put in my LCR is the head unit, the speakers are awesome and there is absolutely no need for a sub. Nobody who gets in my car believes it is standard! (unless they have been changed by the previous owner)

Thanks for the response, sounds very promising! I've read that it is quite a lot of work to put new speakers in the doors. I was planning on leaving my sub out the boot to wait and see if I need it. I just hope the SX has the same speakers as standard as yours.

Yep, I'd agree with that. I have heard some people having trouble when they've replaced their speakers, the standard head unit can't drive powerful speakers. If you are going to replace them (and I don't see why you'd want to), you should look at swapping the head unit as well, or at least getting an additional amp.

But as Yaboy said, for a ten year old audio system it's very good. Heck, it's very good for a 1 year old audio system!! Obviously don't expect panel shaking bass or the ability to broadcast your music tastes to the local neighbourhood, but it will easily mask road noise at any speed.

I think the standard sytem is very good, to be honest its one of the best standard systems in any car I have had. Very good base little distortion as well. Mine is 10 years old now and still sounds good.

I had to change my headunit as the amp had blown in the standard head unit, but would rather have the original back if I am honest.

I had it in for work at a garage and they had the radio on it whilst working, and he asked me what I had done to the stereo to make it sound so good!

I have a Kenwood Bluetooth headunit connected to a iPhone dock and a sub/amp combo. Sounds brilliant - best audio I've ever had in a car! My brother has the standard leon, which also has the same sound system - very good for an oem system!

I am running an Alpine iDA-x305, on OEM speakers, its brilliant.

In my last car I had an 8 speaker & twin sub setup, and I definately don't miss it. For one the OEM Leon set up is better as I am not continually fooking about with the settings when the songs change, and I'm not lugging that insanly heavy set up around.

Really happy to hear all this guys, thanks.

I had a Clio mk2 before and all the speakers in that were dire, so out they all came, and in with new.

Does the little display that shows the radio station display anything else if I want it too? I just don't want it blank!

I am thinking I will live with it for a while as it is, then replace the head unit when I find a nice subtle one. If it isn't enough volume I will put my sub and amp in the boot, and maybe try and find somewhere hidden to put another midrange pair in, also driven off the amp. I'm going to clarity and volume, not broadcasting my (excellent ;) ) music taste.

Collecting the car on Saturday, 5 hour train journey! Can't wait though, just need to remember to take a CD with me.

ALSO, while I remember, the clutch is hydraulic, and when I test drove the car the biting point was VERY high, is this normal or is the clutch on the way out? Could also be the fluid I suppose...

Standard is awesome! I had a saxo before i got my leon and tbh, i spent over £200 on new front speakers for the sax and the leon pisses all over it. Very happy with it!

Sorry to jump in on your post dude but does anyone know if it is a bitch to replace the door speakers? Only reason i ask is that the passenger side door is a wee bit crackly.

Leon/Golf doors aren't the easiest in the world. I have a mate who tried to repair his window (common problem) in his Golf and shattered the glass trying to put the door inner frame back in.

If you're good with yours hands and tatting about then you should be able to manage it.

Be sure to take measurements before you order your speakers, though!

Yeah you need spacers though when you replace them, and silicone the edges to keep them sealed.

 what a fruit loop the glass can be released easily and held up whilst the carrier is changed, then slide the glass back down and re-tighten the two 10mm bolts.

Yep, I did have quite the giggle when I heard the noise of it stattering then ran over to find glass in his hair. He "knew" what he was doing though, and refused my assistance.

I don't think he found it as amusing as I did, especially as I repaired my rear electric window mechanism in my Leon no problem (they're basically the same).

Mine is absolutely superb!

Had a full vibe set-up in my last car, components, sub, two sets of 6 by 9's etc and the leon set-up is just as good and sometimes better. Cant go wrong

We cant all be listening to the same speakers...mine were OK...but I would not rate them as highly as some have here. I would say they are alright as an interim measure on an upgrade path.

Depends what you want really from the sound.

Upgrade the HU first though and go from there. Sound deadening the doors makes a big difference, even with the OEM speakers.

If the previous owner decided to turn it up to 11 on a regular basis it's possible that you do have a poor example. Although you also must have better ears than I have, because I would consider the doors to be plenty solid enough to not warrant sound deadening. SEAT/VW doors are solid compared to other manufacturers! (Even if they do leak...)
