Leon mk 1 TDi 110PS Poor performance

Hi Chaps

I am having trouble with my leon 2001 110PS TDi. The engine seems low on power and struggles to pull through the rev range. I have put vag com on and the engine seems to be getting boost and the MAF seems sensible.

There is no black smoke so I am thinking that the engine may be fuel limited. Are there any common problems with this model?

I have no fault codes and the mil light is not on! The engine is fitted with a rotary pump are these ever a problom or could it perhaps be and ECU problom as I have read these are common on this model.

Any help would be appreciated as it driving me nuts every time I find a hill.

Thanks Mike

Hello mate

i will let you off as your new to this site, but there is a search button which you can use ;)

I would more than likely say maf, but it could be a number of things of things mate, if you know someone with experience of vagcom, they can run test of you maf sesnor and other stuff etc to see if its running properly. Does the turbo feel like its kicking in, does the car have a kick to it, about 2000rpm, if not it could well be maf, is it definately plugged in?
When my maf went my car just didnt feel like any kick to it and felt like a n/a diesel. Also when my maf went it didnt bring up a fault code when i used vagcom

1) Use good fuel
2) Make sure you give the car a good thrashing to clear out the spider webs and work the turbo

If that doesnt work

3) Change MAF
4) Check piping for leaks

if that doesnt work

5) Take to specialist.

graph the MAF with actual and specified values.
do the same with fuel and boost.

sounds like something is limiting fuel. I've seen this on an Audi A4 before and it was the MAF. try unplugging the MAF and driving it. if you get an improvement the MAF is at fault.

Hey, jump down the guys throat why dontcha.

He said in his first (well his only) post that he'd had vag Com on the car and checked boost and maf, so why all the shouting about getting it Vag Com'd by someone who knows what they're doing?

Mike, have you checked the injection timing and valve timing are correct? I've known people change the timing belts and not set them up again properly. Vag Com is needed to set the 2 timing modes and if someone has used the "mark & pray" method when the belt was changed then that could be your problem. I presume it's had a belt change at some point given that the belt has a limited life span on both mileage and years. For your engine it's (I think) 60k miles or 4 years, whichever comes first. If it's been done on the 4 year interval then it's due another change this year (2001 - 2005 - 2009). If the timing is out then you'll have normal (ish) readings on boost/maf, but poor fuel delivery and subsequent lack of power.
