LEON depreciation in ust one year

I know that some of this has been on the forum before, having read some earlier on, but i cant get over what i saw on what car quoted for a LEON Stylance 1.6 at the end of the year dropping to £9262:blink:, having payed just over £14.000 for my new one makes me wonder if i should start to think about changing it already, only had it since may, but having to keep going back to the dealers to have things checked for faults since then is making me think about partexchanging it with a different car if that is the sort of money i would get for it in just one year:(, I cant afford to buy much over £15.000 so if what i saw yesterday for the amount of milage(495) i have done at the moment and newness of it still i think was £10.700 it might be worth considering i think.
It is a shame as it is a beautiful car but the amount of times i keep going back to the dealer to have things checked out, and the amount it would drop to in just one year is really making me consider:cry:

Not good is it. I dont think about the depreciation, I plan to keep mine for at least 5 years. If you keep upgrading and getting new cars it going to cost you about the same anyway, so I dont think it matters.

Next time buy a 1-2 year old 2nd hand car thats already depreciated then you wont have to worry.

These days it not really smart to buy a new car, unless you can really afford it, ie, have lots of money (so says the guy who has just about 18k on a new White FR) or a sucker like me :cry:

I think your right there, i have been very dissapointed with what is supposed to be a new car, as i have said in my thread its been back so many times now for things to be checked over, i might just as well get another car as you said between 1-2 years old:cry:

According to Yahoo, the Leon holds its value nearly as well as the Golf and does a lot better than the Focus and AStra.:)

They are good cars for sure, no denying that and the old Leon shape does still look amazing, I kick myself for selling my lovely Plat Grey Cupra R225. The worst thing is I see it now and again too, so that winds me up too :).

Make no mistake I love my MK2 FR but I could have saved myself about 4k in total if I had kept my 2005 Cupra.

I have had similar nightmare with brand new cars in the past.

My first new car a Fiesta was constantly going back in the garage. I even left it in for a week at one point to fix all the problems (the car was only 3 weeks old by then) and had a year of grief. It settled down after all the faults had been fixed but I did get rid of it after less than 2 years.

My last car the Celica was okay to start with but over the 3 years was in and out of the main dealer with warrenty claims for various things.

If I was you LEON2DRIVER I would keep and just live with the pain of taking it back all the time for the moment. At least its covered under warrenty. Cars always lose a fortune in the first year and then even out a bit. Okay they still go down in value but not as quickly.

If you got rid of it and got a year say 2 years old, that could be full of problems and you would only have a years warrenty on it.

Speaking from someone with a mark1 frtdi, im shocked by how much mine has held its value. Paid just over £13,000 for it couple yrs back (was pre reg with only 9miles on clock). Just before xmas there went for a look at the new fr and was told they would give me £13,000 for it as a trade in:shrug: Only think which stopped me was undecided on looks of the new model.
i think the fr's seem to hold their value better on both mark1 and mark2. I certainly wouldnt be happy if depreciation was that big a step though..

I guess it'll all(partly) depend on supply/demand further down the line. I mean look at the new minis when they came out. People were selling them for as much as / more than they paid 2 years on. I think.

At the minute there doesnt seem to be many secondhand MK2 FR's available so that can only be a good thing when selling on in the future. Look at the MK1 cupras on auto trader. they are still fetching decent amounts

Agree, its supply and demand, unlike Golfs which are two-a-penny Leons are in comparism rare plus they are quite sought after so they will hold their value for the time being. :D

But you will always lose money on a new car, a new car is a pleasure not a practical buy. :blink:

Think you just got unlucky and maybe got a Friday afternoon build. I would keep it till the warranty runs out then trade it in ;)

Sorry to hear about your cars problems, I hope you get them sorted.

It sounds like you've been hit by the extremes of the dealer hitting you for cash at both ends, the figure you quoted £9262 though is the trade price the part exchange price is a little higher on what car, showing at £9695, it also says you can get a lot more for it if you sell it private £10,430.

To show the two ends of the extreme, first in the dealers favour,

buy the car list price, say 1.6 Stylance with metallic paint - £14,045
part-ex the car a year later for £9,695

Total cost over the first year - 4350.

Second against the dealer,

Buy the car from a broker, I looked at direct seat so a uk sourced car with full warrenty etc, price again with metallic paint. - £12,745
Sell the car private (more hassle here of course) - £10,430

Total lost - £2315

The difference between the two methods £2035 goes to the dealer of your choice ;)

The expected depreciation over three years is one of the main reasons why I went for a Leon over the other cars in this class.

Have a look at the What Car Depreciation Index and compare it with the same spec VW Golf, Ford Focus, Renault Megane etc.

They all depreciate heavily in the first 12 months, Leons less so than the others though and Leons level off much quicker. By three years, depreciation is really quite low in comparison.

What Car is all well and good though. Is that a mk1 or 2? I got my 56 plate Mk2 for £14250. I couldn't find anything remotely close then or since. As Jono said. It's all supply and demand and they are like rocking horse poo at the moment.

Its a Mk 2 FR TFSi

Its only a guide, but it does point to the depreciation being quite low on leons. It also depends on where you live on the best price you can get as if there is only 1 dealer around then they know they can charge a bit more.

What car reckon my old Cupra was worth £9650 part ex, but I managed to get £10700 for it:D At the end of the day ALL cars lose money and it something we all have to live with:cry: but I have to say my FR is worth every penny:funk:

I think depending how many more times in the next couple of months my LEON has to go back to the dealer will make the decision for me on whether to go for another car while the price isnt to bad(bad enough) in part exchange, My worry is if i leave it to long then the amount of finance if i took that up would be higher on another new car rather than if i done so in the next couple of months although i know the depreciation would continue dropping while i decide, I dont really want to have finance to be honest but if i want another new car that is decent then the amount to borrow on finance would be much higher if left to long, not what i want really:cry::headhurt:
If this car was right from day one i wouldnt be thinking any of this but there are only so many times you can take a car back to be checked for faults and sometimes be told it cant be replicated, or my favourite one being the aftersales with an attitude problem:doh:

If it is really as bad as you have suggested id look into giving it them back. A similar occurance happened with someone I worked with. He bought a new A3 140bhp model, mid spec and time after time he was taking it back to dealer with problems. Finnaly he had enough and went to the consumer advice people and they told him his rights etc. To cut a long story short he ended up taking the car to the dealers one day, when it was quite busy, and in front of every one firmly put the keys on the reception desk and said he wasnt accepting the car. Needless to say the staff took him into a quiet office to deal with him. They ended up taking his car off him and temporarily gave him a courtesy car. A week or so later they got him in, put up a list of various specs of A3 on the computer and told him to pick one at no extra cost. He ended up with a 170bhp quattro with lots of extras.
Its worth looking into if I were you.

That would be ok if i wanted to stick with SEAT but then i might end up going down the same road again if i picked another one:headhurt: If i did i couldnt really see them saying to me pick any spec you like, It is obvious which one i would pick which would be the CUPRA but i cant even see the remotest chance of that plus the insurance would be a lot more.
Its good that everything worked out well for that chap you were talking about but when it comes to luck mine is lost somewhere, I think all that i might get if i did go through trading standards is maybe the parts whatever needed changing done, but the attitude of the staff would still always be there:doh:
I will have to have a good hard think at what my options are i think.
