Leon base model clutch advice please??

Hi,

Haven't posted for a while but was wondering if you guys could give me a bit of DESPERATELY needed advice?:help:

The wife's '04 reg 1.6SX has just lost it's clutch whilst she was driving home (made a vacuum cleaner noise increasing with RPM of engine, smelt like a badly burned clutch/brake disc, 1st gear is a bitch to engage, and pedal went solid and was at the top of the throw so I think it's a safe bet!). I've got a mate who can fit them better and quicker than me and conveniently he has a mate working at Mercedes who can get various random parts.

He's quoted me £360 all in to change the clutch, of which about £250 of that is the clutch kit! Does that sound about right?? I've only had experiences of clutch replacements with my golfs and they're normally about £60-80 all in! He said it seemed expensive but I thought i'd check to see what you guys thought or if there's any other option which'll avoid SWMBO losing the plot over such an expensive replacement.

Your help will REALLY be appreciated as wifey was in tears over this and I haven't even given her my mate's quote yet!

I'm not sure if the 1.6 has a dual mass flywheel like the other leons (i would assume so) whilst the clutch is off be sure to get that inspected and consider reaplacing and be warned thats about the £250 mark to!

It could be a clutch master/slave cylinder that has gone and may not necesarily be the clutch itself if that makes sense

It is expensive but reasure "wifey" that when its all fixed it will hopefully last her ages!

PS it's allways good to shop around for quotes...sometimes cheap isn't allways best also, try speak to someone who knows VAG engines well

Thanks for that. I'm not sure what it might be then if it could possibly be the other things. My golf's slave cylinder went years ago and I had nothing at all; I was able to drive the wife's car about 2 miles back home once the engine/gearbox had cooled down, and it was just first gear that was a bit of a bitch to get into, with the clutch seemingly engaging/biting right at the very top of the pedal. Before that she said it was stiff as a board.

Any ideas as to what you think the most likely fault is if it's not clutch is appreciated, but unless I get someone out to look at it, i've got to stick with just the clutch as the fault I think.

I'm guessing that £250 for a new clutch kit sounds about right then? I'm hoping to stick with LUC or Sachs if possible cos they're usually VAG stuff and i've had good experience with them before.
