Leon 1.8vt Cupra Few questions..

Hi everyone, ive been reading this site for a little while now and i pick up my new car friday so i thought i would say hello.

I viewed and bought it today, its a lovely deep blue mk1 leon 20vt cupra on a 51 plate sept 2001.
I was reading a massive long thread about engine codes and trim levels and i am really happy to report that it has a auq engine code. Even though i would have bought it anyway lol is this right for a late 2001?
It has full main dealer history stamped up every 10k miles. i was wondering if this is even more often than reccomeded? 10k to 100k every 10 k miles, also the cambelt was done on 93k too, so am i right in thinking its every 90k miles then? Its has also had disks pads and a air flow meter within the last 3 months.

As far as the trim levels go on my year car is it after the face lift when everything was an option? because i have no leather, or auto rear view mirror or trip comp but i do have a 6 disk changer in the glove box, digital climate and a cupra badge on the back which i assume means the harder suspension. Once again thanks for making a great site and i hope to meet you all soon..

Cheers Chris.

P.S im living in bristol!!! If theres any meets arranged..

Hi Chris

I also have the deep blue Cupra which is a Y plate Jan 2001. Mine has the AUQ engine code but does come with the Leather Interior and am lovely every mile I drive.

As regards to your service history it is done every 10K miles or so but the Cambelt should have been changed at approx 60K miles then at more regular intervals so 90k miles sounds about right for a 2nd Cambelt just check the service schedule book. Be careful about what maindealers might tell you about replacing parts etc all they want is your money and your business. Might be worth trying to get somebody who lives in Bristol to recommend a good reliable garage.

Hope some of this helps

Welcome to the club, you've made a good choice.

I'm pretty sure yours will be pre-facelift.
My X reg 01 LC is also an AUQ engine, electric folding mirrors, 6 disc changer (standard) & Climatronic (standard) but no leather, this was an option as was the auto rear view mirror, trip comp and rain sensors.

As Karlos said 10k/1yr (whichever comes first) service interval is correct, this should be stated in your fully stamped up schedule.
As for the cambelt, my schedule (yours should to) states inspection at 60k then every subsequent 20k up to 120k where it must be replaced if it hasn't already been.
However many people, myself included, will say they would replace at 60-80k regardless and I believe Seat and Audi have recently reduced the cambelt replacement interval on the 1.8T engines.

Hopefully the water pump was replaced at the same time as the cambelt if it hasn't been already?

Thanks alot for the replys guys, the book is fully stamped up the cam belt was done at 90k ish service , might just be they did not write the earlier one in, Not sure about the water pump,
i only have reciepts for work carried out from 2004 to now, but the service record is fully stamped up. Is it a big job to do the water pump without the cam belt or is it better to get it all done at once?? any prices on this?? I too have the folding mirrors, i love the seats sooo supportive and it handles really tight,

The ONLY niggle i found on the drive was a kind of jerk or judder on very mild throttle then backing of, like a little miss is this common on these electric throttle i have never had one before take some getting used to i think., When u try to accelerate with very little throttle it just jerks a little.. And considering it is completly standard as far as i know the turbo does whistle a little too, thought it would be silent.,, any ideas?:cartman:

How do i know if its a facelift? its oct 2001 51 plate..

The 'whistle' that you hear is the turbo spinning up and is totally normal
There should be no judder or jerks when accelerating, this is not normal
unless its the turbo kicking in and accelerating the car?
What revs do you notice this?
If its around 2,500 to 3,000 RPM this could be the turbo

You'll find the search function on this site very useful ;)

Hi Chris,

Facelift occurred circa 52 plate so yours is almost certainly pre-facelift unless it's had a nose transplant since. :D

Can't comment of the backing-off niggle you have unfortunately.

Service every 10k is normal... keeping the oil in good condition with regular services is important for turbo'd engines. The turbo whistle is normal too - personally I love hearing it, especially in tunnels :) Welcome to the club.

This is my pre-facelift.
Post has more aggressive styling with beefier bumpers and side skirts.
I think Kermit's is post looking at his avatar?

I have a 52 plate September 02 which is pre-facelift. The slight jerkiness on light throttle is normal on these 180 engines, mine does it a friends does it and I also had a VRS Octavia which was just the same . Had mine re-mapped with APR at Awsome GTI and this improved it a little but it's still there.

jerkiness

Thats for all your replys, the reason i asked about the whistle is because ive had alot of turbo cars and never had one that in complete standard form had a turbo whistle untill it had some mods,

The jerkiness is when say doing 20mph in second gear, put your foot down a little to gain to 30mph say then back off and there is a little jerk, it only did it on the smallest amount of throttle, ive only driven it once so it might have been me, i dont pick it up till friday so will tell then. Was there ever any reacalls on theese cars that it would be worth checking with seat for, just to make sure its tip top, also is the water pump a big job to do then without doing the cambelt? cheers all.

What mileage is it on now?

I only ask as you may just get away with getting the water pump done if it's close to 93k.

My water pump went recently and I have an AA policy to cover repair costs for major breakdowns but they will only pay for the repair/replacement of the failed parts and not any ancillary work so they wouldn't cover the cam belt service part of the repair. Therefore my bill was split and the water pump replacement was £133 all in at VAGtech.

This might be due to engine mounts or dog bone mount being shot??
Could it be the engine rocking?
I broke engine mounts in other car but this was very noticable when car was idleing

Chris, the slight stutter you talk of is very common, its been discussed to death on here, and a friend has replaced loads trying to getrid of it with no success, just seems some cars have it, some don't.

Leather was only standard for the first year of production.

Blue is one of the best colours i think.

i

I just paid £4200 for it from a dealer, its done 105000 so above average milage for a 51 plate but it is absoloutly SPOTLESS, not a chip ding or mark anywhere, when i popped the bonnet it looks like a brand new engine, even the silver pipework above the turbo is bright silver and the heat wrap looks brand new, iam well chuffed. I will try to post a pic......

What does everyone think?
Fully stamped up history upto 98k when cambelt was done too.. Main dealer SEAT.
New airflow meter and disks and pads 3 months ago
4 new p6000's Not my cuppa but they are at least a decent brand, would have worried if it had 4 budgets on it,
