With all this talk about how rubbish the LCR is on snow, especially with most (summer) tyres, I was wondering what solutions people have gone for. The way I see it, there are a few solutions, including another set of LCR alloys (if you want to stick to the OE look) with winter tyres on, and possibly some narrower wheels with winter tyres?

What has everyone (who has gone for winter tyres) done, and how successful have you been?

I think that with all of this talk of having more of the same for possibly the next month or so, I may have to find the money and do this myself, and I'd rather not have to get the F1s off the current wheels if I can afford to just get new wheels and tyres on. Obviously at the speeds many of us are getting in the snow, I'm not that bothered about the best handling, and I don't have a lead right foot, so I can deal with reduced grip from smaller tyres OK.

Fact is even decent tyres on a performance car cant cope with this weather, not much can so id save money, if you done an n249 bypass then you could reverse it as it will help puting power down instead of being attracted to kirbs or on coming cars with wheel spin. Yes tyres are important but on ice, tyres no amtter what wont do jack ****. If your tyres are geting below 3mm, then yeah change them, id put 2 new ones on front and your 2 best on the back, Then when fundss allow get 2 on the back, and swap them over to the front so there wearing evenly.

my Cupra 4 came with winter tyres when i bought it, but i've since replaced the fronts at a cost of nearly £400 :( (225/45/17)

ContiWinterContact TS810s are one of the best winter tyres ever. amazing grip in snow, ice, you name it.
ok, the 4wd helps, but the tyres are immense.

i was going to get a 2nd set of alloys for winter, but i couldn't be bothered in the end as i didn't really feel like splashing out £500 on some decent wheels.

Shaun, got 4 new F1 GSD3s fitted in November I think it was, so the ones I have have 7 or 8mm each according to the MOT on Monday.

What do you mean about the bypass BTW?

No, but I'm curious about why you brought it up.

I'm not using mine at all at the mo because I live on a hill. Work is all downhill, home is all uphill, and I'll get stuck for sure if it snows hard

another set of wheels/tyres is a lot of expence though for a month of use? then again if it saves your car from the kerbs it may well be worth it. im glad mine is parked up not in use at the minute though.

Alot of people bypass the n249 valve which sits ontop of the rocker above spark plug 3 & 4, its sole purpose is to dump the turbo pressure when the car looses traction, alot of people bypass the valve so the diverter is operated by engine vaccumm. So if you have done the bypass it will jus wheel spin, so its handy to reverse it in these conditions as it will help.
