A lot of cars seem to have window tints nowadays !!!

Got me thinking really about having a light smoke type colour (light mind only), thought it might look nice on "Flash", gleaming red with smoke windows !

Ok the low down, do not know anything about tinting except it is a film applied to the glass.

What should i be looking for from a fitter and £ ???

Sensible man....tried it on an astra once..lol, NEVER again, As far as i know the pentagon tints also stop the windows smashing, so makes it a little more difficult for those theiving TWOCERS to get in, only annoying thing is they could'nt do the rear screen, was to big!!!

Hope there is no problem there then with all tinters, i would like the sides and rear screen done, the sides have to be the same level also.

I should imagine their all pretty good at what they do, as for me, not enough patience for it, had bubbles galore...you'll just have to have a look about mate an see if anyone else comes up with any ideas..

AFAIK Legally you can't go darker on the front & side windows (driver and passengers side) than is already on the car. Although lots of people believe a light smoke on the windows (driver and passengers side) is OK I believe there is an issue....

(Rear passenger windows and back windows are fine you can go dark on these)

I hear if you do have anything on the side windows(driver and passengers side), even a light smoke and you have an accident insurers are starting to test cars with tints (obviously they should be declared on the policy anyway) and in some cases Insurers are saying your not covered becsause you car is illegal and they are walking away.......leaving you uninsured :(

So if you do tint then just Rear passenger windows and back window only

Rudd...i got pulled in my old Punto GT an the tints are really dark all round, the coppa told me that the legal limit was the same as a tint on a standard ford focus window..not to sure if this is true but thats what he told me. They did'nt seem bothered by it but i guess they were having a good night, i know one of my mates was made to cut his front tints out at the side of the road whilst the coppa stood there an watched him do it...a bit of a grey area i think on this issue..*wondering if i declaired my tints??? better phone them tom*..

I've got Mid smoked on my LCR.. and I HAVE declared it with my insurance company. I had tints on my previous car and never got pulled because of thiem, likewise in the Leon.. nothing todate and I've had copper wait for me to put them down to talk to me and still not mention it!

I swear by Gatwick Autoshades in Pease Pottage (end of M23!). Super price too.. and workman ship A1!!

OK...Law states that there has to be a minimum of 70% VLT (visual light transmission) on all windows level with and forward of the driver. What this means is, the front windows and windscreen can't be tinted as they leave the factory with a 30% tint as standard. As for the rear windows, you can go as dark as you like! Be warned, if caught with darker tints on the front, you may be lucky and they will just take you to a test centre, test them and make you rip them off infront of them. But if your unlucky you could end up with 3 points and a fixed fine! (the voice of experience)

Im getting mine done for £100 (Group buy of 5 cars) next month. Going for the lightest possible tint on the driver side and passanger front and one or two steps darker on the rears

So you know you run the risk of
A - Being made to remove them by the Police
B - Possibly end up with 3 points and a fixed fine
C - Your Insurers walking away from you if you have an accident

Even if you declare to your insurance company you have tints, the responsibility is yours to ensure they comply with the law, if you drive an unroadworthy vehicle expect no help.

Can I ask any member with any tint on their side windows what they think about this scenario....

You are at a T-junction in your SEAT, you are sure you have checked the road, you pull out and a motorbike you didn't spot hits you.....it's your fault. The motorcyclist is killed and your insurers claim you didn;t see him due to your 'illegal' tints and wash their hands of you.

After you have been sued and lost your house and car to pay the fines would it be worth it?......plus the death of the motorcylist on your mind

Granted that nothing is worth the life of another motorist, but my insurer knows about the tints, the police will be far more bothered about my number plates and if you look at the worst in everything you would never leave the house.

The reason this law was implemented is because some idiot, drove around with a doubled up tints on his front windows, effectively limo tint. And killed a motorcyclist.

As of the result of one retards actions, the law goes into over-protective mode, as much as a 50:50 tint wouldn't effect vision, even at night.

Drive round with a limo tint, on the front, and your a retard, plain and simple. Just a shame its tarred everyone else with the same brush.

I have a light smoke tint added to my fronts, they are quite probably illegal, but i've not had any undue attention, yet :p, they are really not that dark. The rears have 35% tint.

If i didnt see the motorcyclist in the scenario, he'd have to be a. invisible or b. doing well over 100mph round a blind bend.

In which case a. i couldnt see him because he's amazingly invisible and b. his fault for being a retard and doing 100mph into a blind bend.

All subjective really isnt it, what if scenarios are brilliant. :)

Seriously though, your taking a gamble, so if you'd rather not gamble don't do it, im not overly concerned that my tints are making my driving or vehicle unsafe, but as a matter of interest I might get them tested, if they far exceed the guidelines, then I may remove the front tints

Rears are not an issue though, dark as you like.
