LCR in the garage again

My car is in with the stealer this today. It's been making a weird rattle when going over bumps and off the throttle.

Just had word of what is up, apparently I have leaking shocks and worn wheel bearings.

They are checking whether this is covered under my extended warranty, I bought the car from the same dealer in June. It's an 03 210 LCR.

Is this normal? Has anyone else had this problem? My car has done 46k?

Anything else I should be getting looked at/done while they do this work.

What's the likely damage if it's not covered?

wheel bearings can only damage themselves but dont normally rattle.
if the shock is leaking then there maybe play in between the housing and shaft causing movement (rattle). not sure on what they would quote for time but deff no more than 3 hours
only thing i would check is weather car is sat level once they have changed the leaking side as the other side has done 46k and may have a little sag

Ok got the verdict back.....

1 front wheel bearing has been done under my warranty.

It needs 2 new rear shocks - £226 fitted
Two new lower front ball joints - £185 fitted

I bought the car as an approved used SEAT from a dealer in June and these items are not covered under my warranty. I though these cars were supposed to have a full check before they were sold as "approved used"? Does it mean/is it worth anything?

Have to say I'm pretty gutted. That's £411 out of nowhere and I've just bought a house and supposed to be saving money.

Might have to investigate whether these items can be done cheaper at an independant....

I'd say you could get it done cheaper elsewhere note that the LCR balljoints are larger than the cupra ones when ordering (TT225 and S3 are the same as LCR) rear shocks I reckon you could fit them yourself and save a few quid. :D

Ball joints are £35 apiece.

So they are charging you £115 in labour to fit them, which could be about right.

I had my drivers side ball joint replaced a few months back as it was clunking every time i went up and down into my drive.

Cost 1 1/2 hrs labour to do so 2 of them could well be 3 hrs!

£115 would work out at around 3hrs labour

When you do get the joints replaced make sure you take it out for a spin before paying as the allignment goes all to ****. My steering wheel was off centred with the road wheels meaning i was driving at the 11 oclock position to go in a straight line! They did sort it out for me though when i complained!

Not sure about rear shocks

Yes and good point made above, make sure they order the balljoints directly from the chassis number of your car as twice they sent me LC balljoints thinking that they were same for LCR.

I'm in the process of getting a quote from a VAG specialist in Leeds so I'll see what happens. If I can get it done any cheaper then I will. The dealers labour rate is £60 an hour.

Rear shocks seem bloody expensive!

Ok VAG specialist has got back to me, he seems like a really knowlegable chap.. he had the following to say:

Firstly he'd kick off with SEAT and claim there is no way all this could have happened in the 3-4months I've had the car.
Secondly the parts required are dealer supplied only so he would get the same prices they do.
He says 1.5hours labour to do the shocks
2hours to do the ball joints
He also says a 4 wheel alignment is advised after doing the ball joints which is £65 plus VAT

Labour rate is £40 (plus VAT obviously)

I'm off to the stealer now, see what they have to say and get a cost breakdown of the work.

Yes you defo need the tracking checked after doing so buddy

That will work out dearer though.

2hrs labour £80+vat = £94 + cost of ball joints, (approx £70) = £164 total + cost of 4wheel allignment £65+ vat = £76 so £240 all in.

SEAT quoted £185 so quite a bit cheaper and if your not happy with the steering afterwards, im sure they'll adjust it free of charge if you complain hard enough!

Ball joints are wear and tear items and would not be covered by warranty, its the same as the likes of tyres/pads etc
