LCR Ball Joint? Scary drive!

Evening all,

Had a bit of a scare on the way in to work this morning! Basically, I'd noticed a knocking when braking/accelerating the previous day and was going to get the car booked in today, however the car obviously wasn't happy with that and decided to let me know it needed attention earlier by completely knocking out the steering alignment after a sharp right turn and knocking constantly on the smallest bump. Also the TCS light was on permanently. I seriously thought the wheel was going to fall off.

Anyway, pulled in at work and after reversing in and hearing lots of odd noises from the near side front called out the AA who took a look for me, I needed to know it was safe to drive home!

He jacked it up, gave the wheel a shake and the move from it was amazing, it didn't even look attached. This was tracked down to the three bolts on the ball joint being more than bit loose. He tightened them and I drove home ok but being careful.

I plugged in vagcom when i got home and the fault code was something like steering angle sensor error. I'll clear it before taking to the dealers and see if it comes back on the drive down.

Now the car is booked in for monday to get this looked at and the AA guy reckoned I'd just need new locking nuts put on to sort it. I've tried searching and it seems others have had this happen to an extent, but not in conjunction with the TCS light. Does this sound more serious than 3 loose bolts?

Ta.

sounds about right, both with the fault & the loose bolts. use new bolts asap though.

the steering angle fault will have been because the car will have been travelling straight, but the wheel will have been off centre

I'd advise replacing these as well as the bolts.

Cheers for the replies. My only issue now is that as it's such short notice at the dealer I've got to pay for a hire car separately on Monday, and no doubt they won't have the parts either.

Looks like the work will be cheaper than I thought though. :)

It was more checking the rest of the area over - and I'd booked it in before the AA had come out. You may call it stupid but I'd rather be sure. Besides, they did my MOT around 4 weeks ago and I'd have thought it should have been visible then.
