When starting from cold or when the car has been sat for a while there is a noise coming from what sounds to be the front of the auxillary drivebelt area. it's a metallic knocking noise similar to a fast twanging sound which is irregular and disappears when the revs are increased (it only happens at idle and disappears for good when the car is on the move). The noise doesn't return when idling at traffic lights or junctions etc.. just for a 10 or 20 seconds or so after the engine is started.
my engine is a 110tdi non pd (ASV). Mileage is 100000 and cambelt was done at 60000. I'm assuming it is the aux drivebelt though and not the cambelt.
Has anyone any ideas what this is or have you experienced this noise? i'm suspecting the aux drivebelt tensioner, power steering pump pulley or alternator pulley. I would have thought if a bearing is on its way out it would squeal or make a grinding noise.
Any help would be appreciated as there are a lot of variables in this area
Cheers
