Doing a k04 upgrade on a 1.8T. I've purchased some tasty new hitachi boltdown coilpacks as i understand the existing ones will most probably fail after the conversion.

2 questions-

1) I've not installed the new turbo yet (will do next week) and i reckon i've currently got one coilpack failing before i've even started. Can i install the new boltdown coilpacks before i do the conversion (so the car runs well for the next week) or does this risk blowing them when i get round to doing the conversion?

2) The boltdown coilpacks have a smooth shaft and rubber end (oo-er) whereas the old ones have some sort of metal catchment to get them to seat. I'm assuming the rubber end is the seal whereas the old coilpacks seal at the ribbed part. Can i run the new boltdown coilpacks without actually bolting them down? Reason i ask is i dont have the bolts (doh) and it will prob take me a while to source some.

Sorry for the long explanation, thought it would be confusing unless i fully explained.

Cheers

Scott

You should be able to run the boltdowns without bolts for a while. Just give them a pushdown every day or so to make sure they remain seated.

Changing the turbo after they're fitted will not affect them.

excellent, thanks. while i'm here, any chance you would know if i'm as well to replace the timing belt and tensioner and waterpump (car has done 80k miles) while im in about swapping the turbo? bare in mind i've also got to change the clutch and flywheel while im at this.

well, i would but the guy thats helping me with the mechanical work has a lot on his plate, so it's really from a practical / labour cost point of view more than anything. I'm wondering if since i'll have half the engine out will it be quick and easy enough to do the timing belt work?

if it's 6 and two 3's i'll prob just get him to do the timing belt work a few weeks after i've got it mapped up. but then again, it's prob more likely to go after a remap isnt it? :)
