right

got the pedal box out and a new one in in what i think is a very good 3 hours :D
as a note for other people doing it, you dont need to remove the steering column, and therefore dont need to fight the shear bolts...

but... i have the whole lot in and working, tho i have the following part

part number 20 on that diagram... its the clutch return spring, but by christ is it tight... is there an obvious way to get it on that im missing? it looks as if is almost 3/4 compressed when attempting to put it on...

im guessing its the long spike thing on the right of this pic that it sits on also

i also have a nut left over lol... but no idea where it goes... think its a spare o_O

ALSO: how does the clutch cable mechanism thing work on the gti 16vs? the adjuster thing in the middle of the cable? the clutch cable feels tight and im thinking the clutch may slip slightly

Yes, the spring needs to be compressed to get it in. I put one end on (the one nearest the back of the car) and then made a 'ramp' for the other end of the spring with two screwdrivers leading towards the place it needs to sit in. By then pulling on the screwdrivers, it compresses the spring and guides it into place. Ps don't the shear bolts go through the pedal box?

How did you manage to get the pedal box out without removing the steering column?? I had to move mine to get the pedal box out, hence taking out the sheer bolts.

Clutch spring thing is really tight to get in. Oh you need part 21 in? the little metal curved bit that goes under one end of the clutch spring thing?!

I dont have that in as I couldnt get that and the spring in so I left it. :ban: But my pedal and clutch works much better without it.

I managed to remove the steerer collumn by dismantling the height adjustment mechanism, but i'll be :censored: if i can get it back together again without grinding off the bolts!!! [:@]

@ Cruiser87 - I think the spring just helps with the pedal feel. I had the same discussion with the boss whilst struggling with it, i gave up, he took over and got it back in. :) We decided that if it was designed to be there, it must serve a purpose.

the steering column came loose at the bottom when i removed the shaft support bracket that goes between brake and clutch pedals... enough that i could then wiggle the pedal box out easy enough... hardest part of the job was getting the shaft back through all pedals and spacers etc... that took a good 30 mins other than that it was a piece of cake to do :) lol

well... that and the spring i never got back in

the sheer bolts held the steering column up, and had nothing to do with the pedal box...
the pedal box was held in by 6 nuts at the back of the box, and 2 bolts that bolted thru the top of it

Good Work dude! 3 hrs that must be a new record!, I took 2 lots of 4 hrs to do mine, I still cant picture how you got it out without removing steering column, either way nice one. My spring snapped off a lug when I got it off but still works OK when it went back in, speaking of which, I couldnt get mine back in either, had to call in reinforcements (dad in law) who got it in about 10 seconds flat! My brake pedal was really stiff afterwards, I had to bleed a bit of fluid out to release a bit of pressure.

Does anyone know if you actually need the same metal part thats on the end of the clutch pedal spring that rests on the pedal box??

It was under the spring when I removed it but couldnt get it back in when refitted. But my pedal works so much better without it, its sooooo much smoother without it aswell.
