I've been on here a while now & thought I'd get round to making a Readers Ride thread for my Leon.

I've had it since around June 2012. Bought it from a friend who runs his own auto-mechanic company so it had been well looked after - underneath anyway!
I'd initially gone to see him for advice on viewing an Ibiza FR & ended up buying this. A much better purchase I think.

How it sat when I had a look at it:

It had hit a deer a few weeks before, damaging the offside wing, destroying the mirror & leaving a few deep scratches in the paintwork. The wing was repaired as part of the purchase.

Underneath the car was sound. Standard throughout, 66k on the clock with the cambelt changed at 65k.

It has been quite a slow project. Between keeping this on the road & having a flat, my first year apprentice wages took a bit of a pounding:lol:
My main objective was to tidy the car up with smaller items at first before moving onto bigger hardware when funds allow. But just driving the car has been so much fun so I've been really happy with it.

New boot badge.

Fabia rear wiper

Fitted a replacement "teardrop" mirror in place of the temporary Golf item.

Gave the car a machine polish not long after purchase too, which gave results similar to this all over the car. This was the rear bumper before/after.

As you can see the tarnishing on the Starfish alloys is terrible in the pictures & I tried a number of things to sort that including a fallout remover which worked slightly, polishing by hand and finally went all-out & wetsanded all of them.

Before/After wetsanding.

The process involved cleaning, wetsanding with 1500 grit paper, and smoothing by hand with 3 progressively finer compounds of cutter/polish.
Also painted all 4 callipers red that weekend, along with fitting pressed aluminium plates.

So having put so much time into essentially refurbishing the Starfish wheels, I went & changed them:happy:
Trial fitting an RS6 rep.

And got them fitted with Seat centre caps a couple of months later after new tyres aswell.

Decided to fit a new induction and settled on a twin cone from Auto Silicone Hoses.
Perhaps should have been done a while before now:happy:

A much throatier noise on acceleration now, and the usual boost sounds when changing gear/releasing the throttle.

That's me pretty much up to date now, the only thing to add is that I've got a small bit of paint repair to do at some point as some :censored: drove into the car last Saturday night as it parked outside my flat and drove away without leaving a note.

Only a bit of cosmetic damage, but I'm still to give it a proper check for the bumper hangers now etc. Still very annoying as it's extra & un-necessary work for me to do.

I've got most of the supplies either bought or ordered to carry-out that repair work now, along with new spark plugs, oil, a new filter & a magnetic sump plug for an oil change.

Plans are to get it through the MOT at New Year & by then I may be in a position to lower it. I think there's a problem with the o/s/f spring so that may happen before the MOT, killing 2 birds with one stone.

I'm really happy with how the car has been so far. Much more expensive to run than my old Fiesta but it's also been a good learning curve in more ways than one.

I'll update with progress as & when it happens.

Cheers, Jason.

Had a RR day over at Sitech Racing today. Happy with the results, better than I had expected!

Running ever so slightly rich, but nothing to worry about I'm told. Infact it means it's ok to get the boost turned-up:whistle:

Toyosports 3" downpipe & decat arrived the other day

Spacer for the O2 sensor too.

Going up to Aberdeen tomorrow to hopefully fit it all. Got the offer of either an inspection pit or 4pt lifter all in a garage which I couldn't turn down:happy:

How much did you pay for the de cat? Is it an eBay bargain I have seen these on eBay for around 100. Am hoping to get one myself. Would be nice to read how yours goes on/ works.
But I would have to change mine on my drive ain't got your luxury's

The two pipes & sensor spacer totalled around £100 from ebay, so it's probably the same kind you've been looking at.

My car gets parked on the street so I'd be ecstatic with a driveway - tomorrow will include a 3hour round trip just to get that fitted:lol:

As far as I've seen, the 1 piece pipes are 2.5" diameter, and the 2 piece are 3".
I can't see any other significant differences.

Decat & downpipe both fitted this afternoon - great use of a gas turbine engine workshop:happy:

Some difference in ID of new pipe compared to standard.....

Feels much more lively on acceleration now, and the exhaust note is slightly different - not too loud at all but a definite improvement:)

Yeah that's a good shout mate - you'll love the drive after fitting it I'm sure:)

Got that exhaust clamp fitted in place of the row of temporary jubilee clips so I was able to give it a bit more beans on the way home from Dunfermline on Friday night, made me quite happy:happy:

Time to get saving for brakes & suspension.

So I'm now looking at dealing with the advisory items from the MOT last month.

Starting with the front disks which are slightly pitted, so next week a new set of disks & pads should be getting delivered.

One of the advisories which had me confused was "Discoloured rear indicator" on both sides:blink:
Not sure exactly how that's come about, but they look fine to me:lol:

What did you dou for bolts on your decay as I just messaged toyosports and they said none come with bolts only gaskets

Pretty much all the new ones you see on eBay come with gaskets & bolts, as mine did.

Should be just 3 bolts with nuts & washers aswell, to join the 2 sections. You just use the studs on the back of the turbo for that attachment.

Yea have done thanks. I gotta get under it and finish off as I did it in a rush at work so have a couple off things to sort out.

Front brake discs & pads got a change yesterday as the pitting on the discs has been an advisory this year.

Went for OEM spec Mintex all round, 312mm discs.

Had a nightmare with this little sod - we seriously fell-out!

Didn't realise quite how bad the old discs were until I put old/new side by side. Tatty to say the least!

And the decat showing its presence on a cold evening......

Couple of small updates.

After 2 days spent detailing the car in Dunfermline a number of weeks ago, the car had been parked back outside the flat for about 5 hours and someone had driven into it & scarpered, for the second time in 5 months. Luckily it was only the o/s wing mirror this time, rather than bodywork damage again!

After a few searches I found someone breaking a Cupra R in the right colour so bought the pair of mirrors and took a gamble on a cheap "dump valve".
The mirrors are power folding, which will be needed on my street! Switch came so I'll have a go at that lot a bit later.

And the "dump valve" has turned-out to be a Forge 007 recirc valve which is quite a result. Gave it a quick DIY service which is the least I can do, being second hand. A quick guide for anyone looking to do the same, very easy stuff even for a novice, and very worthwhile I reckon:

As it arrived.

Dismantled to component level

The 2 O-rings/seals sit inside the main body and are fairly robust so will come out with a finger nail but they're still seals so take care not to damage them. There is a third seal on the top face of the main body but I left that in.

This particular valve was fairly grimy and had a bit of oil inside which was a bit messy for the living room table, oops.

Simply cleaned away all the dirt/oil/grime with some blue-roll, and some pointy cotton buds for the seal recesses.

Next up, some Vaseline for re-lubing.

Light film on the inside of the main body & outside face of the piston. Just make sure the surfaces are coated with no big chunks or anything.

Re-seat the 2 seals and insert the piston back into the main body. It should be able to slide freely - if not then one of the seals has probably come out of its recess.

I put another light Vaseline film on the top surface of the main body, over the 3rd seal. Then simply sit the spring back in & screw the cap on.

Finished with a touch of Autosol.

Good to go. Will get round to fitting the valve, mirror & switch on the car this week sometime.
Thanks.

Also got the first of what will eventually be a few new suspension parts.
Front dampers, Bilstein B4 Sports.

Rears will also be B4s, and for springs I'm thinking either H&R or Eibach, we'll see.
