Jacking points for trolley jack

I would like to get a trolley jack so I can get the car jacked up and give the wheels and arches a good clean.

I am a newbie when it comes to jacking points etc so want to be 100% sure im not going to do any damage, Anyone had their car lifted on a trolley jack yet and if so where where did you use as a jacking point on the front and rear?

Most of the underside of the car seems to be covered with a plastic under tray which doesn't help matters.

Any pointers appreciated

i use a trolly jack on mine all the time jack up under the the cars jacking points on the sill flange where its re-enforced

Ah ha, so its ok to jack on top of the actual flange? Wasnt sure it'd be ok to do with the round head of the trolley jack as I know the boot jack is a long/thin head to go round the flange.

Get an ice hockey puck and cut a groove in it that is deep enough to take the flange so the face of the puck lands on the reinforced plate. They fit really well into the heads of most trolley jacks and have enough give so as not to crush the sill or mark the underside of the car.

I use a block of wood cut to the right size for the T jack.

I did that before I used the puck. Just have to make sure you cut the grove in the wood across the grain rather than with it....

As a matter of interest, where do you get a puck, and what do they cost.

I'd imagine a sports shop or eBay will sell a puck which could be butchered.

Axle stands are another matter, where do you normally put those? Ive used various methods in the past, including a high lift jack at the opposite end of the car to the one I want to work on. This invariably lifts the entire side of the car allowing an axle stand to go under the other jacking point. Any other methods?

Do a search on eBay for 'jacking pad adaptor'. There's lots of rubber ice hockey puck style pads with a pre-cut slot for sale for around £5-£6

You have to cut the groove not too deep so it's bearing on the flange and nowt else.

I just cut to the same depth as the factory jack. IIRC the factory jack normally lands on some ribs on the floor just inside the flange so contact is made both there and on the flange.

Anyone got a factory jack to hand to measure it's depth?

I've tried measuring the flange on the car, looks like 28mm deep x 15mm wide would fit.

Anyone with a jack who could measure and confirm?
