is it worth changing to a diesel !

Afternoon All,

I presently have a LC and recently moved and now i am doing around 350 + miles a week, hence me petrol has gone up and i got a bit of a surprise from my bank when i see i spent over £200 in a month on the petrol !

so obviously now, i am thinking maybe get a cupra tdi ! are the savings worth the change? bearing in mind my car is an 2001 , tdi curpras are alot newer so will have to find around 4 / 4.5K from the bank for the difference in price from mine to the tdi !

I dont think it is worth it as the loan would be around £100 /£120 a month then the gas on top and i reckon that would be £100 at least = what i am paying now and i owe nothing on the car !

Haven't you just answered your own q Stevo? does not sound worth it. 350 miles a week is not a massive amount of miles, but yeah to save money there is no point is spending more on another car to lose the benefit of having a diesel!

You would be better switching to another car if you are that worried. Either that or try and conserve every now and again by keeping foot off that accelerator!

I decided last month to see what I could get out of a tank of petrol in my LCR by not booting much at all - just shy of 400 miles. It is possible but wheres the fun in that??

Seriously, it's up to you - I can easily get 400 miles from £40 tank, & thats a mixture of booting it & driving normally (but mostly booting it haha)

350 miles a week is a large amount, soon adds up (roughly 19k a year!) now seeing my FR 150 I get on average 50mpg or 550 miles per tank, drops to 450 at the very lowest if Im booting it everywhere, so take this for example

£40 petrol = 400 miles (going like a granny)
£40 diesel = 600 miles (going like a granny)

19,000 miles / 400 = 47 and a half tanks of fuel = £1900
19,000 miles / 600 = 31 and a half tanks of fuel = £1260

Thats a saving of £640 a year on fuel alone and less time filling up although getting 100 miles per £10 on petrol is extremely good, dont think you could get that easily day in day out, whats more these figures are based on my FR 150 which is plenty fast enough!, if you was to get a 110 or a 130 you can save even more on the fuel!

Also I dont know how true it is but I have found the air con on diesels to use way less fuel than on petrols, I can have my air con turned on and not notice on the diesel, maybe 10 miles on a whole tank. On the petrol I noticed it drained fuel economy down.

Now Im doing in excess of 30k a year, so i save around £1200 on fuel alone each year, plus the diesels are cheaper to insure, have much much more torque and are really nice to drive. Plus you get more satisfaction overtaking the boyracers as they realise its a TDI thats 'rinsed them up'

however if you boot it properly you can go through a tank in 200 miles. saying that the Mini can empty a tank in 140 miles if you drive like a complete Hoon

I agree with the diesels on this one. I use to have a type r, doing about 15k a year, then switched to a bora 115 tdi to get some cash out car for a house. The difference in running costs is massive. not only fuel, but insurance, tyres, servicing, depreciation.

And to be honest on day to day driving I prefer the ease of driving the bora round town and on long journeys, so much torque. Still miss the vtec moments but I think my driving license is safer now too!!

I would say no at the moment, but definitely budget for it with the next car you buy, whether a Seat or otherwise.

Once you've owned a diesel, you'll never go back (unless you can afford a Ferrari )

To my mind, to anyone doing more than about 10k miles a year, petrol cars are just pointless. A diesel FR offers much more real life performance.

Excellent economy when you want to be frugal, a growling monster when you want to give it some beans, more usable performance (how often do you do a 0-60 run compared to a quick overtake with no gearchanges required?), or indeed WANT to rev round to 7000 rpm and have the thing screaming just to get the thing to move?

In fact I reckon I probably drive a lot quicker and feel the car's performance more than I would do in an LCR, because I'm not thinking about the fuel bill all the time - AND I do over 500 miles on a tank!

It's a no brainer to me, but in your circumstances it may not be worth it yet.

Personally, the benefits are worth the extra money even beyond the economy. They drive so much better, I love the lurch of all the torque when you change gear as low as 2200RPM! :-D

i have a 150 fr its fab with fuel at least 460 miles on a full tank.do motorway and a little urban driving.sometimes rag it but not much .
over all the diesel is better in my book for mpg
