is air con broken? mk3 ibiza cupra

hi i tried to use my air con toady but only warm air came out so i went through all the heat settings and the only change seemed to be when i put it on hi setting then it got hot but no change on anyother settings just warm. anyway i stoped the car and tried aircon again and with no music or reving when it powered up there was a hissing noise, the only thing that used to happen when i started it was a slight rumble in the car when it powered up but now i have hissing. is it fooked? what should i do, and who should i see, can i check anything myself. cheers in advance peeps.

Have you checked the fuse on top of the battery. There are three, the one on the far right is the one in question. Has a habit of blowing, you need to replace it with a 30A if it has.

no i havnt checked the fuse i will do tomorrow, would that make it hiss though? sound more like a leak to me but i dont know a lot about mechanics that why i ask you guys, and also the ac light is not flashing but it does turn itself off everynow and again.

SEARCH - this has been covered a lot of times - and quite recently as well!

But just this time - check the external temp sensor isn't reading some funky low temperature.

Best to start with the basics and rule them out before you need to spend money on complicated problems.

You're right it probably wouldn't make the AC "hiss" as you say, but its always worth checking.

no i have normal temp reading, i did do a quick search befor posting but i didnt find anything that seemed the same problem.could there be a split pipe or something?

On the aircon note,

My external temp sensor reads nothing, it just comes up blank. Usually i thought if they went they just read a funny temp not nothing at all or is just a temp sensor replacement in order.

Run the aircon and stick your head in the bonnet and see if you can hear where this hissings coming from mate, failing that maybe buy a topup kit thingy from halfords and see what its reading, i expect you wouldnt have any coolant left in there if it was leaking.

ok that makes sence about the coolant, but i did stick my head in bonnet and i couldnt hear anything i can only hear it inside the car, it sounds like its coming from under the gear stick, (that kind of are)

ok i just checked and the ac light is flashing now im hoping it means that it needs re-gassing? any idea on cost? could there be a problem as to why it is out of gas or just ran out? i doubt it has ever been done and its coming up to 90000 miles now

not yet ive had bigger and more expensive problems to sort out like a fooked oil pump that was lucky not to kill my cupra.

well the pump change was £280 its the r.a.c cost that pissed me off that was £250 for about 100 miles i was not happy so next time i go any where that far ill be getting cover and thatl prob only be about £100 for the year

my air con stopped working today, this morning it was lovely and cold and this afternoon it was warm, AC isnt flashing, temp was reading 26, so think ok better check the fuses......... Bingo
