iPod & RNS & OEM Bluetooth - Talk to me!

Hey folks!

I shall soon be a MK2 Leon owner! It will be a 2006 model and has the OEM bluetooth already fitted so the highline dash etc.

Anyway!

I plan to fit an RNS510 or maybe the 310 depending, so I guess I just need a possible answer regarding iPod connection.

1) I should have checked already but is an 06 model likely to have the Aux-in under the seat? I forgot to check on the car today.

2) Will the RNS510/310 plug and play happy with the existing steering wheel controls and bluetooth setup?

3) Would this be all I need to connect the iPod to RNS;

I guess the only other question would be, any tools/facia adaptor needed to fit the RNS to the Leon?

Many thanks and sorry for being a noob in advance! :)

I am staggered by the responses - please calm it down! ( :lol: )

ANYWAY!

Forget questions 1 & 2 I just now want to know;

* IF I fit a SEAT RNS 510 Will I still get battery drain (2006 '06' Model Leon) ?

* Any real difference on the SEAT/VW RNS apart from the logo? I don't care about the SD card slot so either will do - but there are versions C, F, H etc I had a 'C' on my Golf. If they are both loaded with the same maps is there much of a difference between the VW/SEAT RNS510?

* The above question about iPod connectivity!

I would like to order the relevant parts ASAP folks so would appreciate any replies...Even if it's to tell me to sod off!:lol:

Hi SeanyK,

1; Don't know (my 07 reg/build in 06 doesn't)
2; Yes.
3; battery drain, probably not, depends on the firmware of RNS510 unit.
4; Yes, SEAT units stop at rev B, VW go up to rev F I believe... Newer LED screen and larger HD capacity on the later units.. VW versions (even the older ones) have the ability to have software upgrades beyond that capable of SEAT units (mostly due to the SD card slot I believe).

Mine is a VW rev B and I've been able to change the splash screen to SEAT. Check out this thread;
http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=139255

read it all,

and this
http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=338435

Mine was advertised as,
"Version B
SW Version: 2760
Will fit cars with old CAN Gateways and will not cause battery drain.
Video in motion activated."

So anything from this SW version up should be ok.

Roy

No clock shift problems on a SEAT unit. ;)

Dunno if there are any VW units that don't have the shift problem, it may again be a Software/Firmware issue. :shrug:

Ahhh now I have a dilemma :)

So, the SEAT version, does the full UK 6/7 Postcode apply? Or is that down to firmware?

Basically, as I can get VW or SEAT RNS version with the latest V8 maps - but just wondered whether because the SEAT has old firmware, whether it won't support any of the newer postcode functions etc (and also be sluggish/slow through the menus)?

Ok, my 2 cents!

I have on 06 Leon and I installed a SEAT RNS510 and MDI kit

Firstly the RNS510:

The SEAT model stops at revision A. The latest firmware is 1024. I bought a SEAT version as I wanted the OEM look (you can now change the splash screen using software on the VW model). It works great but will never have full postcode entry or anymore firmware updates. I installed V8 maps with speed cams recently and all works fine

YOU WILL GET CLOCK SHIFT if you have 06 as the tenth and eleventh letter (I think) of your VIN

I also installed the MDi kit in my glove box for my IPod. I get artists and track names on the RNS510

I have had some probs tho. My Bluetooth menu no longer shows up on the instrument cluster. This is due to my CAN gateway being an older version. I'm upgrading it this month to version P. Also the skip buttons on the steering wheel no longer work. This is also due to the CAN gateway

I've totally forgotten what else you asked so feel free to ask some more!

Hello mate,

I have 05 as the last digits of chassis if that makes a difference?

Yeah I spotted the post about changing startup logo so in theory getting a later VW RNS would be ok although still worried about the clock shift as I think that would get on my nerves!

I had a Golf Mk5 GTI and I changed to an RNS version C, and replaced the CAN Gateway so I kinda know the drill - although it was a pain changing the CAN gateway due to its location on the Golf - is it easier on the Leon?

So I have summarised almost this;

1) If I buy a SEAT RNS, it will be old firmware, no 6 digit postcodes but probably will NOT have clock shift?

2) If I buy the VW RNS, I can update firmware, have all the postcode update etc, although WILL get clock shift and WILL get battery drain unless I change the CAN Gateway.

3) I buy a VW RNS at firmware 2760 which works on older CAN-BUS to stop battery drain - but will still get clock shift!

As for the bluetooth - that could be annoying and definitely the track skip buttons not working would annoy me!

Grrr! It's kinda looking like a newer RNS and newer Can gateway then to be safe??

I think you will get the clock shift no matter what. There's a thread on here somewhere where a poster changed his CAN gateway on his pre MY07 Leon hoping it would fix the issue, it didn't! I think the clock shift has something to do with the font size and spacing on the older pre MY07 instrument cluster. You would need to update the whole cluster to solve the prob :-(

Well, I only have the small MFD with no bluetooth (if only I'd known when ordering the car, I figured it was just a mute radio/put phone through speakers jobbie... ) so I'm prob not the best person to advise on the clock shift issue...

Still I thought it was not a problem with SEAT units, after all weren't they an option on early (pre 08) models?

As for the track skip, I can with the < and > on the right hand side of the steering wheel, but not with the ^ and v ones on the left. Can't actually remember what I used them for anyway, changing radio stations I think? (< & > ones do that for me now on RNS 510...)

So it looks like i'll buy a VW version with 2680 firmware to stop the battery drain on older Can Gateways - until I change the Can Gateway (IF I do).

Is the clock shift massively noticable? Any photographs at all of it?
