IPOD Kit IMHO not great

Not very impressed with the IPOD kit for two reasons. First it is a fiddle to get the IPOD in, I admit this is not helped as my wife has a nano and I have a video and the different size holders are screw in rather than adjusting. This is made harder firstly as the under seat location means you can't see what you are doing and secondly we like everyone I know (and everyone I see on the tube etc) have some sort of cover for our ipods which you have to take off before fitting. Personally would be better if the connector was a short lead, would also help as and when new ipod comes out that don't fit the current sizes.

The second reason is you get no display on the radio of the artist / song info and no ability to move forward by album just by track which means you have to either pre program a playlist or use shuffle. Bit poor compared to the USB which according to the manual does show the track info and can skip albums.

Does anyone know if the ipod module is a std VW part and if there is a better one on other VW brands ?

Also related anyone got suggestions for DAB in a Leon, I can only assume they will come out with a DAB radio in the next year or so.

Mhy ipod was fitted as standard when i brought the car from Droitwich Seat and is infront of the hazard light button hidden. I can chose to skip tracks via steering wheel controls and have setup playlists on 1 - 6 buttons on radio

Hidden in what way? Could you please take a photo.

I can do the same, but cannot move to the next albums (akin to swapping CDs on a multi player). I have about 50 albums on my plod, and it would be nice to choose by album. And nice to see on the screen what album I am listing to :(

Yeah on our FR the ipod dock is really crap for the money they charge. It should display what the ipod has on the screen and shouldn't be located by the drives feet.

Any aftermarket ipod docks that work better?

I must say I am a bit alarmed by these comments. I have chosen the ipod connection as an option, with the hope that it would display what is being played. If it does not do this what really is the point of the connection? You might as well just use the AUX connection?

Correct, you get to skip forward a track (but not choose an album) on the steering wheel and you get funny looks from others when you park and are scrabbling between your legs for hours to either get the plod in or out, and it gets charged (or should read gets overcharged so destroying the internal battery). IMHO it feels like a first generation product hence my question is can the module be replaced ?

The problem with the ipod kit seems to be that it is fed in through the CD changer input and this does not read the track info. The head unit is capable of it as it reads MP3 CD's without problem. I find it hard to believe this could not have been rectified.
Has anyone else found that the stereo rarely defaults back to the ipod even if you were playing it when you exited the car.

A concerning thread, and I'm now hoping that the kit my dealer is fitting to the car I've ordered will be different than the one described here!
At the very least I'd like to be able to change albums and tracks from the controls and was sort of expecting to see the ID3 tags details as the header unit is MP3 compatible!

How much do you want it to offer though, remember you should be driving not searching through your album list for the album your after .....

Yes i realise its safe to do it when parked / queued traffic etc.etc, but still .. perhaps the thoughts behind the system was to just provide forward / back / skip and volume - and you to create the playlists *before* your journey.

Am i the only one to have my Ipod here? It was in when i had the car from new, i thought it would be under the seat but no:confused: . Either way its a Dension link and i'm glad of its position so i'm able to plug in easy then hide in the recess at the back. Its also got full playlist options from the 1-6 on the stereo
