Hi All,
I've been having a problem with the car over the last few weeks and I was wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar and could suggest what might be causing it.
The car is a 2001 1.8T cupra.
On turning the key in the ignition the starter motor runs but the engine doesn't fire up. Initially I thought it was a problem with the battery but I have tested the voltage across it both without (approx. 12V) and with (approx. 14V) the engine running - so that seems fine. If I hold the key in place so that the starter motor keeps turning it does fire up after about 15 seconds, but the last time I did this there was a very strong smell of unburnt petrol.
If the car doesn't start up on the first go then a second turn of the key gets it going. The problem is very intermittent, doesn't seem to be anything in common about when it happens - fuel level, hot or cold engine, wet or dry weather, hot or cold outside temperature.
A few of things that I'd thought might be causing the problem were; the immobiliser, the coil pack and whatever holds the pressure in the injectors (used to be the accumulator on my old 16v).
Anyway, If anyone can offer any advice it'd be much appreciated.
Cheers,
-Greg
