I was driving my Cordoba 130 up a hill in 4th gear I put my foot down and there was a pop and virtually no power and a load of grey/brown smoke. I stopped looked under the bonnet, all the hoses on top of the engine were intact, but I could just see the bottom intercooler hose was blown off.
The car still ran but shockingly rough, so I drove the 8 miles home on very light throttle at about 45mph laying a smokescreen behind me. My question is I assume the smoke is due to too much fuel being burnt due to the hose blowing off but will I have done any damage to any components driving it in that state, also is a jubilee clip a better option for holding it in place in the future as I dont want to buy a stock one and have a repeat performance that scared the crap out of me?

Probably just needs the wire clip that holds the hose on replacing, they can and do get weak and let go.

If you drove gently home the motor should be fine, it will just have overfuelled a while.

Thanks for that info ,got underneath and I see what you mean, I cant use a jubilee clip because the way the hose clicks into the plastic intercooler sleeve. The hose is in good nick apart from the little metal lugs are worn a bit, so I'll just replace the clip and hope it doesnt blow out again.

Seems my problem isnt the clip but the elbow joint hose, the metal lugs don't line up with the part of the clip thats supposed to hold them in place, they sit just under 1cm away, if I twist the pipe they just pop out again and sit to the side of the clip, basically a poorly manufactured part, so its new hose and new clips time. Not impressed at all to be honest......think I'm going to investigate some custom pipework.

You might try a different kind of clamp. But if the lip that positions the clamp is worn, it might be difficult to get it tight enough to hold. And in that case the rubber pipe might need to be replaced -- and it's not cheap.

You haven't done any harm by driving it that way. You just weren't getting any boost, so there was not enough air for the amount of fuel -- that's why there was so much smoke.

I've had to replace the elbow joint hose that connects to the bottom of the intercooler because it was faulty, you're right it wasnt cheap and after doing extensive searches I realise clip failure is quite common so I've bought replacement clips for every other joint just in case.

Hi - this has just happened to my Leon while I was on my hols.

The raised metal lumps on the end of the pipe have rubbed nearly flat, it went while I was towing my caravan.

How much did the pressure pipe cost you mate?

Thanks

Peter

It was a coronary inducing £86 inc VAT BUT it goes like stink now, I must have just got used to the slow reduction of pressure over time until it popped off, maybe it was half on I dont know but now it feels quicker than when I first had it, almost like theres a new turbo. Smooth. quiet and great MPG.
Make sure you get the right clips though, the clip that holds the hose to the intercooler is a mirror image of the other hose clip, they are different, make sure you get 2 different clips, this site has helped me a lot in my search for the right info.

Good Luck!

I think in total there are 3 or 4 very similar, but very slightly differently sized, clips used on the pipework in different places.
I vaguely recall that it's impossible to tell from ETKA which clip is which, so for the tiny price it's well worth buying a selection.

Any make sure pipes are firmly pushed together before fitting new clips, otherwise the clips will sit on the metal lugs rather than behind them, resulting in the pipe popping apart again and the lugs being worn off (which means a whole new pipe...)
