Hi guys tried today to install an FR badge on the front grill of my recently bought Seat Leon FR mk 1 (2004) but it wasnt that simple. Apparently the part of the grill in question has to be removed as it is impossible to access via the engine compartment as the radiator is located there. No problem if it was attached by screws but instead it is held there by some sort of black rivet like screws. I have been adviced that a special tool is needed for this and it would be best to have it installed by a garage/mechanic. Any ideas ?

Hello there,

I've attached an image below of the front bumper that includes the grill and fixings,
basically item 1A is the grill and item 21 is the plastic retaining clip.

Yes it is correct you'll need the proper tool but it's only so you don't break the plastic retaining clips, to be honest I've removed them on other VAG vehicles with just two flat ended screw drivers, just takes a bit longer to remove them without the proper tool.

Item 1A front grill
Part number 1M0 853 653A

Item 21 plastic retaining clip
Part number 333 867 633

(Second image) is of the plastic rivet type retaining clip, it's the centre of this clip that you have to lift up, then this allows the whole clip to come out in one piece. Refitting is simply making sure the centre of clip is lifted up, and just put the clip in where it needs to go, then push back in the centre section of clip to lock it in place, it's really easy.
Yes it's quicker with the proper tool but like I say you can just use two flat ended screw drivers.

(Third image) is of the proper tool but you can get cheaper plastic one's.
To be honest you don't need this tool it simply just makes it slightly quicker and easier to remove them, but if you intend to remove any interior trim in the future, then it wouldn't hurt obtaining the proper tool, as you don't want any interior trim to break.

Hope this helps
Si

Hi mate tried to remove the grill today after all this time and managed to remove the plastic rivets easily with a proper tool like the one you mentioned but the grille was still attached and just couldnt remove it. Didnt want to force it in case it got damaged. Couldnt quite see where it was still attached to. Are there further rivets or screws that I am not aware of ?

Hello there,

I've managed to find a couple of photos from this Forum that I've added/marked with blue, yellow and red arrows/dots to hopefully help.

The first 2 photos show the front main centre grill and the two side grill's.
The blue dots show the plastic trim that you'll need to remove.

I think the plastic trim in the above photo marked with blue dots in my previous post, it should unclip and lift off.
In the photos attached below I've marked the area's in yellow where you'll need to unclip that trim piece to remove it.

Once that trim piece is removed it'll look something like in the attached photo.

I think then with that plastic trim piece removed, it should give you better access to the centre main grill marked in red.
The areas marked in yellow is where you'll need to carefully prise a part the moulded clips, there's others lower down around the back I think.
Then the centre piece grill marked in red should lift out I believe, as shown by the two red arrows.

With the centre main grill out this will give you access to the back of the two side grill pieces, that sit either side of the centre main grill.
This hopefully will give you enough room to fit your FR badge.

Hope this helps

Once again thanks for the detail info ref the removal of the grille however I could be wrong but I dont think this pics are of the grille of the Leon MK 1. Nevertheless I will check again although I am pretty sure my grille is all in one piece. Like I said I removed all the plastic rivets marked in blue without any problem but couldnt find any further screws or attachments.
