induction kit or airbox mod?

Please help i have 03 lcr and my warranty has expired so am free at last and was hoping u guys could help with thne first mod induction kit or airbox mod?:confused:

i was looking at smoothing my airbox... but the cold weather came and i got lucky with an induction kit.

im happier that i went for the induction kit for the throaty sound. i dont know if its gained much else tho.. but pod this sunday should give me an idea.

All depends how much your willing to spend mate,from reading here there doesn't seem to be much difference in terms of performance between the two,the induction does give you more of a sound if thats what your after,i modded my airbox,takes about half hr with a dremel then near £40 for a green panel filter.
don't know if that helps:shrug:

Could do what i've done and smooth the airbox out, and create a bigger inlet hole with a 90mm air feed from the front of the car behind the fog light.
Car now gets far more air in faster, and gives it a deeper induction sound.

Davey thats a tidy looking intake, very nice! Just out of interest where did you get the piping from?

Also steadman...I'd personally go the smoothed airbox route, (which I have done) unless all you want is a nice noise...then get an induction kit. But I think smoothed airbox is defiantely the better option all round.

Everyone is different tho so the next post will prob be from someone saying how awesome induction kits are ha ha!

I'd look at it this way...if you start with the smoothed airbox you can allways buy an induction kit after if your don't like it, and even if you bought a green panel filter you'd only be £40 down.

Basically, from an un-biased perspective, the key is to keep things cool and flowing.

The smoothed airbox achieves this, without a doubt. The existing box prevents heat-soak from the hotter engine components/mechanicals, but you do lose the induction grunt/roar on acceleration. The bay looks standard, save for the higher diamater ducting running to the grills.

The induction kit will invariably suffer from a little heat-soak, purely because it's open to the elements. Combat this with a heat-shield, or a kit like BMC CDA.. that way you don't lose potential gains due to warmer inducted air.

I'm going to go down the smoothed airbox + larger ducting and green cotton panel filter route. Mainly because I'm more concerned about performance gains than noise.

Although many would advise against it, if you want a taste of the noise produced by an induction kit fitted Cupra/R without actually shelling out for one.. remove the top of the airbox.. leave the filter in place and use the existing hose clips to keep the hosing angled over the panel-filter... rev up engine and admire noise, maybe even take it for a little spin. At this point it's worth noting the dv recirculation noise is a lot louder - don't leave the box-lid off for long as it'll invariably screw with the fuel-air mix.. (the reason the 1.8T 20v engine was run on re-circ DVs for so long).

Pretty much an identical note to the one produced once an induction kit is fitted..

Each to their own, at the end of the day.

Lickwid, you WILL notice more noise if you do a similair mod to mine. My Induction note is deeper now and throatier, but as it's a diesel it's not heard that much over the engine.

Always good to hear. I'm 23 and the big kid in me still wants to hear the wooshy DV and roary acceleration - I just can't justify sacrificing performance for noise..

If your smoothed box + higher flow ducting still shouts its head off, then quality :D Glad to hear it!

I've noticed a slight increase in intake noise, when lifting off the throttle, but it's not noisy, by any means, and once you have the window open you can't hear it at all, from inside the car, what it's like outside i cannot say ...

And as you say with the mod there's no heat soak problems like you can have with some intake kit's.

I'd expect intake temps to drop slightly as there would be 3 times the volume of air passing through quicker than with normal air intakes, so this should cool it quicker, plus the existing intake stops just behind the radiator meaning it probably gets warm air heating it up when at a standstill or travelling slowly.

Didn't have a brand name mate, just an induction hose. The end peice is metal and came with it. All in for less than £40.

For what its worth i have tried standard air box with green panel filter and i am now running induction kit(jabba).The green panel filter was a big improvement over standard and to be fair to seat they have done a good job on the standard air box,its twice the size of the one i had on my fabia vrs.However i was always left feeling that it was stuggling to get enough air at high revs,mine is remapped and at it felt something was holding back at high revs,only thing i could put it down to was not getting enough air,so i bit the bullet and ordered jabba induction kit(it came with stainless heatshield and JR cone filter),it cost me £170 which is expensive compared to green panel filter @ about £40 but when fitted it looked spot on,and the stainless heatshield does just that,no warm air gets any were near filter,it actually deflects heat away better than standard plastic air box which always felt hot after a good drive.
As far as performance,well i have no air flow logs but it picks up quicker,and not just a little bit,it also doesnt have any more problems at high revs,so that tells me its letting more air in,i wouldnt say ive gained any power over panel filter but it picks up better and revs harder,nothing is holding it back now.
It sounds good,not too loud but good dv sound with my bailey and lots of turbo sound,you can hear it from out side car but its not like say subaru which can sound silly.
At end of day you pay your money and take your choice,£40 for panel or £150+ for induction kit,just be carefull which induction kit you go for,there is good ones and bad,its better paying a bit more i think.I am well pleased with mine and would recomend it,it does everything its meant to and ive had no problems with maff sensors!!.:)

My K&N hasn't caused any MAF probs, but then it got blotted for excess oil before it was fitted and i barely touch it when cleaning it now.
