Generally, rear disk brake calipers contain separate mechanisms for footbrake and handbrake. The handbrake mechanism is mechanical and self-adjusts as the pads wear by the piston climbing up a screwed rod. When you come to fit new pads, the pistons have to be screwed back down those rods. That's why you can't just press the pistons back in, like you can with the front caliper.
It's not the only way of making a rear disk brake/handbrake combination, but it is common.
