I'm in deep immobiliser poo, no working keys, programming not working

Hi guys, I have a 2006 pre-facelift Leon, with no working keys linked to the immobiliser. I got a new key on ebay, and an Xtool VAG401 from amazon and started following the RCDS walkthrough for IMMO4 key programming.
When I get to the step where the key is linked, the dashboard says 0-1 instead of SAFE, which apparently means that 0/1 key pairings have been successful.
The Passat 3C section says that a working key (which I don't have) has to be present, and the dashboard screen is acting like the rest of the section describes.

Basically as far as I know, I am in deep poo, and would like any advice on how I could get out of it...
