Illegal tyres from seat garage

Morning everyone,
First off Merry Christmas to you all.

I have a small problem with my 05 Cupra R. Purchased it from Sidlow (very happy with the service etc etc. Started to notice about it pulling to the left (heavy turning left) so popped it in to my local garage Hidsons (top garage). They found that the car had different tyres on each corner and one front tyre was on the wrong way round. Ive been told that this is very dangerous and illegal to sell a car with this..

Hidsons then dealt with Sidlow about changing the tyres around to make a matching set on the front and matching set on the back. (making the new tyres on the front but a cheap sh!t china make). This made the car worse and turn everywhere under breaking. So they then swapped the fronts to the back and front to back. This made a huge improvement and now it doesn’t steer all over the place. Only problem being I have new sh1t tyres on the back, they don’t grip anywhere and just makes the whole point of having a cupra R pointless.

I called up Sidlow and asked them to change the tyres to a set of new decent make tyres, they said “as long as the car has 3m of tyre tread they are not breaking their contract etc etc”. I have called seat uk and told them about the problem and they recommended speaking to the deal owner. After speaking to Owen from Sidlow he is getting me a price on new tyres.

Now I’m not going to pay to get new tyres as its there mistake. Just wondering what you guys think??? Should I take them to trading standard for selling me a dangerous car???

Do you have any way of proving those were the tyres that were on the car when they sold it to you?

The answer to this question, would be the answer to your own IMO.

i had the same kind of issue with barrets when i brought my lcr last year, the pirelli's were on wear markers in centre and 4mm at edges, even the spare!! i kicked up a fuss and they changed tyres for some **** ventus k104's.... loud as hell and ruined handleing, i complained telling them that i had paid them £14k for them to turn my car into a standard family hatch but to no avail. so i contacted seat customer care because in the manual it says you should only fit tyres approved by seat for use on that car...i was told they only have to fit a Y rated tyres regardless of quality because if its Y rated its able to cope with the forces the care produces (what a load of jobsworth bollocks!!) but they had done this so i had to leave it at that. having just paid out £14k of my hard earned i've had to put up with them but recently got a great deal on 4 p zero rosso's through work so they will be on in the new year. Hope you find my experience useful?

theres no harm in getting advice from trading standards. With the advice you can speak to the dealer giving them the advice you received from trade stand. Remember your not threatening the dealer you have just been giving some pointers.

1.6mm is the legal amount of tyre tread you should have on the centre 3/4's of tread area. You'll prob find thatthe tyres have raised outer edges which are designed to wear out quicker than the rest of the tyre which IS NOT ILLEGAL. Most sports tyres have this function.

Trading Standards will be able to offer the relevant advice for legalities of what has transpired. I do believe the they have fulfilled the requirements of the law to change the tyres over to a matching legal set. You can have another word with them, and ask why the tyres fitted were not the tyres came as standard on a LCR (Pirelli P Zero Rosso's) and why did they not change them to this or of a similar ranged tyre as this is 'factory standard'.
If this doesn't work, see if you can work something out. For example, ask them to get the new prefered tyres but you will add the difference.

As i said in my post all they have to do is fit Y rated tyres to comply with what seat recommend for the lcr. at the end of the day they are a franchised dealer and all they are considering is cost, and it costs them less to fit crappy Y rated tyres then it does to fit rosso's. if the jobs bin done you are fighting a uphill battle.
