Hello,

I'm currently in the market for a new car. I've been hanging around the forum reading everything I can on the Leon Mk1 LCR.

The question i pose to people, despite it being a Seat forum is...

If you had to choose between an 06 Golf Gti, pretty standard spec, or a low mileage 06' registered LCR which would you go for and why? Honest opinions too ;)

Thanks all, I look forward to hearing others points.

the original Golf GTi's were great cars until they started to gain weight and lose power.

Saying that my friend has a 2l turbo GTi with the DSG box and thats pretty good!

Chassis is better on the Golf, but overall tuning potential you can gain alot more from an LCR... :)

Nothing can beat it pound for pound on value.

For me, the Golf with DSG is an awesome car, but does look a tad too soft for my liking aswell, also quite common compared to n LCR

as in not sure if you would like it?

its weird, you cant feel it changing gears (he doesn't have the paddle change option) its just one continuous burst of acceleration.

not sure if there are any common problems or issues with the system tho.

personally i think i would miss changing gears.

Just for a bit of balance I'd go for the Golf for the following reasons:

1. I'm more of a cruiser than a racer so something slightly softer appeals to me.
2. It's a more modern design & less in your face.

But I realise these are maybe negatives for someone else! - Really depends what you're looking for.

Don't know how long you plan to keep the car either but I expect the LCR will hold it's value better due to being rarer but the golf will have wider appeal and be easier to sell on.

Thanks for the opinions. :D

With regards to the LCR, from what ive read the sellers market is pretty poor so i expect it wont hold its value. But with the golf...its a golf. I guess they will always be sought after.

It's a tough choice really but going on badge snobbery & keeping with the times, it has to be the Golf. However if it's tuning potential and a little individuality, then the LCR is the sure winner. I find that the Golf 5 looks up to date, especially since the MK6 hasn't deviated too much away from the shape (it's techincally a facelift MK5 let be honest) but the LCR by no means looks like an old dog, the bodykit still fits in today. Personally, knowing that I can't keep my hands off of the engine of any car that I get hold of, i'd choose the LCR, well in fact I did :). I was in your predicament a year or so back but I feel I made the right choice although if the Edition 30 would have been in budget, i'd have picked that.

Cheers Jay. Yeah the Ed.30 is very nice but i cant see myself paying that much, for essentially a golf.

The .:R32 on the other hand....

Edition 30:

- snobbery, check
- modern, check
- tunable to 350bhp on stock turbo, check
- used prices, hell no!

I love the R32 but it's more of a cruiser than anything else with a nice exhaust note and interior. You need to spend big bucks to make much more power than it already produces so I had to rule it out. The fact, at that point, that used MK4's were still fetching £11k - £12k also put me off. I would imagine that used MK5's are fetching similar money today so I would still rule those out.

It really boils down to what you want from your next car but if you choose the LCR, I don't think you'll be disappoint.

Yeah your right again!

I just want something that will fly to be honest. Having a clio at the moment it makes me want to cry every time i get in it.

Looking at remapping and things, the figures for the Gti Golf and the LCR seem to work out the same so that doesnt help me.

I'm trying to convince myself to purchase a golf as it's viewed as an all round better car...but i just dont like it! lol. It could well be LCR time

I may be wrong here but I think that the GTI uses quite a small turbo, I am not sure which one it is but I have been Googling so I don't tell you a load of cr@p, I can't find the answer though. I believe that it's smaller than the k04-023 used on the LCR anyway.

Stage 1 on both cars brings you to the same figure, circa 260bhp and 280lb/ft however, I think that's where it pretty much stops for the GTi, even with an exhaust system & FMIC from the S3, the turbo runs out of puff. From this point, most GTi owners have to invest in the larger k04 turbo that's fitted to the S3/Ed 30/new Cupra to reach 300bhp which I am guessing isn't cheap. Although the LCR will not reach 300bhp without turbo modifications, 280bhp is achieveable on the standard unit when using a turbo-back exhaust, FMIC & Stage 2 remap. If you are unhappy with investing 'new turbo' kind of money into the car, then the LCR would be the best bet for you.

Tough decision - However go for the LCR mate best damn daddy car I've owened, worth every penny :D

However after a few years of ownership of the LCR, if the Golf GTI edition 30 comes down in price then may be tempted :p
