Be very very careful when trying to put back on the piece you have to chisel off....

I followed the Elsawin guide using the steering nut, and ended up cross threading the steering column thread.....with only about 3 lines of thread left could only find a plumbing nut that would hold the steering wheel on and would have to keep retightening every 2 weeks.

This was in June and just today managed to replace the steering column, them shear bolts a complete pig to remove and took 2 of us 1 whole day to remove just one giving its so awqard to get to....

Anyway yesterday after removing the column and breaking the little tommy bar holding the lower and upper column together so a phone call to seat yesterday and picked them up today and refittted a brand new column... Now it drives like a dream, no play in the steering wheel.. Tight as a nuns ##### !!

Overall cost £90 for parts and lots of swearing all just in the begining to replace a £15 column bearing....

Sorry to bore you with this story, just want to warn people be VERY careful with the column thread... I guarded the new one with my life wrapping it in masking tape as not to risk any damage fitting it !!

Cheers

Yeah it was only the Steering wheel and indicator stalks you need to remove to replace the column bearing as its in the ignition barrel housing... When I was doing mine I cross threaded the column thread thats why I removed the whole column but this isn't neccessary just for the column top bearing... Thats what causes the play !!

Hi allibe got play in my steering wheel and have narrowed it down to the steering colmumn how hard is it to change the bearing? Or is it easier to replace the whole colmumn, it's driving me nuts feels like the car is unstable especially if I drive down a cobbled road or a rough road, any info would be great guys!!
